OZONA ELEMENTARY HOME OF THE OSPREYS Belinda Atkins - Principal Jessica Downes - Assistant Principal 601 Tampa Road, Palm Harbor, Florida 34683 (727)724-1589 Volume 29 No. 5 December 2016 Principal’s Message: Dear Parents, Each year as I get older, the years seem to go by so much more quickly. It is hard to believe that we are in the holiday season and the 2016 New Year is just around the corner. As I reflect on the first half of the year, I am amazed by how much we have accomplished for your child/children: We welcomed 780 students back on campus in August….it was flawless. Back to School Nights were successful as well as: our annual Family Fun Night, All Pro Dads, Osprey Celebrations, Veteran’s Day Salute, Fall Festival, Book Fair, Principal’s List Breakfast, canned food drive, Jingle Jog/Movie Under the Stars, direct giving campaign, and our Osprey Partners in Education program. This continues to be a high functioning school due to the faculty/staff, parent and community support. I am so fortunate to be in an environment where education is so highly valued by all of you. Our Extended Learning Program is also off to a fantastic start. We have students participating in Robotics Club and STEM. The New Year will bring learning activities in the areas of creative writing, reading, math and science. Also, be on the look-out for a survey surrounding after-school enrichment opportunities for your children! We want to provide the educational experiences that you want most! I love the enthusiasm for learning and engagement and we will continue to work together to meet the needs of our students. There are great things coming our way here at Ozona! I want to also thank those of you that have supported the direct giving campaign sponsored by our PTA. This money is integral in providing those after-school enrichment programs and will go directly to fund instruction and materials in the areas that you most want to see! Please consider any donation amount… It is greatly appreciated! I will end by thanking you for entrusting your children to us each day. I have the most dedicated staff that works hard to make sure your children are in a nurturing environment with a strong academic focus. Working together in partnership, we know we can make a difference in your child's life. I wish each of you a peaceful holiday season full of family and friends. Why not turn it into an opportunity for your child to practice what he’s learning in math. Here are some ideas. Weigh and multiply. Fruits and vegetables are often sold by the pound Ask your youngster to compute how much your produce will cost. For example, say you want 6 bananas and they cost 49 cents a pound. He would weigh them and multiply their weight by the cost per pound (2lbs. x 49 cents = 98 cents) to get the total cost. Comparison shop. Let your child help you save money and learn to be a better consumer. Ask him to read unit-pricing labels on shelves to find the best value (8 cents per ounce for one brand of pasta sauce vs. 13 cents per ounce for another brand). Or he can look for the better deal: one box of cereal for $2.79 or two boxes for $5? ($5 divided by 2 = $2.50 per box, so you’ll save money buying two boxes and storing one for later). Estimate the total. Ask your youngster to predict your total bill by keeping track of what you put in your cart. With each item, he should check the price and round up or down to the nearest dollar. As you go, he can keep a running tally on paper, in his head, or on a calculator. At checkout time, see how close he came. VOLUNTEERS It is time to update your hours for the first semester.
