Clinical session 1 Definition and classification of diabetes mellitus, and other disorders of carbohydrate metabolism according to WHO. Epidemiology and pathogenesis of different types of diabetes. Clinical symptoms of diabetes mellitus and laboratory diagnostics criteria. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) – performance, interpretation, indication, contraindications. Current criteria of metabolic control of diabetes mellitus: glycemia, blood pressure, lipids. Group B Clinical session 2 Pathogenetic background of the treatment. Modification of the lifestyle (diet, excercise). Antidiabetic drugs (biguanides, sulfonylureas, glinides, thiazolidinediones, alfa-glucosidase inhibitors, incretins (analogs of GLP-1, DPP-4 inhibitors), SGLT-2 inhibitors – mechanism of action, indications, contraindications. Characteristics of different types of insulin and principles of insulinotherapy in type 1 and typ 2 diabetes. Self-monitoring of blood glucose levels. Seminar 3 Chronic complications of diabetes. Clinical session 3 Chronic complications of diabetes: microangiopathy (retinopathy, nephropathy), and macroangiopathy (cardiovascular disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease), neuropathy – pathogenesis, classification, clinical symptoms, diagnosis, prevention, treatment. Diabetic foot syndrome. Seminar 4 Acute complications of diabetes. Clinical session 4 Hypoglycemia – most frequent causes, clinical symptoms, prevention, treatment. Diabetic ketoacidosis - causes, clinical symptoms, laboratory diagnostics, treatment. Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state - causes, signs, diagnostics, treatment, specifity of the state in elderly people. Differential diagnosis of diabetic coma. Lactic acidosis – causes, symptoms, diagnostics, treatment. Clinical session 5 Presentation of patients with diabetes and different medical problems. Credit for the course.
