Independent Reading Project – Unit 2
Objective: To encourage, support, and motivate independent reading by appealing to
various learning styles and offering students multiple choices when responding to books.
The Plan: Choose any book of any genre that you wish. Make sure it is a “Just Right” book
and get it approved by me. You will be expected to read 20-30 minutes every Monday
through Thursday evening. Document the pages that you read as well as a
summary/reflection on your reading log. This log must be signed by your parent/guardian
on Thursday evening and returned to me every Friday. Books should be completed by
December 22, 2015.
The following project will be completed after reading the novel independently. Read and
follow all directions to receive full credit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book “Selling”
You will be presenting an oral book report in the form of a “book sell”. You are
trying to sell your book and create interest in it. Imagine you are a publisher and the more
people you can get to buy your book, the more money you will earn. You are really going to
try to sell that book!
You want people to know a little about the story, but mostly you want to create
interest by telling them why it is such a good book to read. You will be sharing a short
summary with the class (the book buyers) along with at least three reasons why they
should go out and buy your book.
There will always be someone in the audience who doesn’t want to read your book
because: it’s too long, it’s about girly stuff, it’s boring, it’s not part of a series and as a
sales rep – you need to be prepared for those negative naysayers. When you present your
pitch, include one reason people might hesitate to read your book, but then respond to it
with a well-developed argument that makes their hesitation seem like the wimpy excuse
you know it to be! Win them over – make them want to read your book.
Now for some specifics – You will have between 3-5 minutes to win your audience
over to your way of thinking. At the end of your sales pitch, your audience will have a
chance to ask you extra questions about the book, but those questions will not count as
part of your time. You will be creating a glog in class which will be your advertisement of
the book (more info on that to follow). You will use this as a prop along with the book you
have read.
Before you present your book to the class, you will need to fill out the outline of
what you are going to say (back of this paper). After you have your outline, you should
practice presenting your information. You will be graded according to an oral presentation
and glog rubric. You will be graded on your presentation skills and the content of the book
and advertisement glog. With knowledge of your book, an outline, a glog, and practice, you
will be able to deliver a convincing pitch to sell your book.
