COURSE DESCRIPTION
Focusing on objects and human figures, this course is designed as an introduction to
‘drawing as seeing’, drawing as visual language and ‘drawing as manipulation of surface
and spatial illusion’. Important elements of the course include: material exploration,
drawing accuracy and heightened sensitivity to observation.
LEARNING OUTCOMES





Apply design elements and principles through observation and analysis
techniques to create dimensional drawings.
Research and apply historical and contemporary information to current design
ideas.
Experiment with a variety of tools, textures and mediums.
Apply ideation and conceptual skills through the use of an ongoing sketch book
Learn and apply rudimentary presentation skills including formats and
appropriate language use during critiques.
COURSE METHODOLOGY
Studio work, seminars and lectures provide the foundation of this course.
KEY TOPICS
The major topics in the course include:
Point/line/plane, line as mark, line as continuum, line quality and weight, tone and
value, light and shade/shadow (chiaroscuro), rendering techniques, surface and spatial

illusion, texture, shape, form, structure, proportion, volume, weight, balance,
negative/positive space, background, middle ground, foreground, material exploration,
thumbnails, process work, sketching, observation, accuracy, sensitivity, detail, concept,
comprehension, analysis, conceptualization, composition, cropping, communication,
presentation, perspective and paraline.
TEACHING METHODS & DELIVERY
The variety of formats used in the class includes project work, discussion, presentations
and lectures. The teaching methodology is concerned with ingraining theoretical
knowledge through practical experience. Teaching methods and delivery will include a
combination of lectures, demonstrations, critiques, individual and group discussions,
student presentations and in- class work.
