Topic: Nuclear Non-Proliferation
General Information
Nuclear Non-Proliferation is vital for achieving a peaceful, better world. With many nuclear
warheads still out there today our world cannot start working for peace. Peace is not possible to
achieve when worried about what nuclear war threats. Nuclear energy can be used in positive,
peaceful ways and not as a weapon. Use for the positive and disarmament of the negative will
reduce fear in the world and begin to allow peace to settle upon us as we work toward a better
world. Bosnia and Herzegovina are members currently of the NPT and advocates for a more
peaceful world without nuclear weapons. Bosnia and Herzegovina and the First Main
Committee are concerned about nuclear proliferation and weapons of mass destruction in our
world.
Specifics
Bosnia and Herzegovina, as State Party of the NPT, would like to see nuclear energy used in a
positive way and not as a devastating weapon. There is a threat to all countries in the world
when there are weapons of mass destruction and nuclear warheads that are not disarmed. Bosnia
and Herzegovina are at risk just like the other countries of the world and would not like to see
mass chaos ensue from nuclear technology in warheads. To show support of nuclear nonproliferation Bosnia and Herzegovina are signing Party States of the NPT, Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. No nuclear warheads reside in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has sought on an international level to support nuclear non-proliferation
by signing and becoming a State Party of the NPT. They have also obtained a non-permanent
seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2010-2011 term in order to combat problems
such as this. A statement by H.E. Mr. Sven Alkalaj, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and
Herzegovina asked that more effort be put in place to reduced nuclear warhead arsenals and
enforce the three pillars of the NPT in May of 2010 to the Review Conference of the Parties of
the NPT. As a State Party of the NPT, Bosnia and Herzegovina has showed and plans to
continue to show full commitment to the treaty and wants to contribute international efforts to
promote security and prevention on nuclear technology as a weapon.
Bosnia And Herzegovina would like to see a reduction of nuclear arsenals after noticing a
rollback in efforts since 2000 to reduce them. They believe that nuclear disarmament can
encourage State Parties to comply with their obligations toward the NPT. Bosnia and
Herzegovina welcomed the outcome of the Nuclear Summit that highlighted the global threat of
nuclear terrorism. The view that countries have the right to the use of nuclear energy stands with
Bosnia-Herzegovina as long as the use is for peaceful purposes and adheres to the NPT.
Implementation of NPT Safeguards and their verification by the IAEA is a reliable instrument
and must stress the importance of nuclear weapon elimination. A compromise and flexibility of
State Parties would be entertained by Bosnia and Herzegovina to uphold the three pillars of the
NPT and nuclear disarmament. Bosnia and Herzegovina advocates nuclear non-proliferation and
is part of the fight against nuclear terrorism.
