Building Stone Institute Announces the 2014 Tucker Design Award Winners
OAK PARK, IL, June 25 -- Building Stone Institute (BSI) honored twelve outstanding design projects at its biennial Tucker Design Awards program held at Unity Temple in Oak Park, IL.
First presented in 1977, the Tucker Design Award is the most prestigious architectural design award for both the building and landscape design communities. The Tucker Design Award honors those whose work exhibits excellence and innovation in concept, design, construction and use of natural stone.
As part of the celebration, BSI member Lurvey Landscape Supply hosted an open house the day prior at their Des Plaines, IL facility, including a credit-earning seminar: Introduction to
ANSI/NSC 373 – Sustainable Production of Natural Dimension Stone . BSI celebrated the winning projects again on June 26 th
at a reception held in their booth shared with other members of the Natural Stone Academy at the AIA National Expo, being held in Chicago.
In conjunction with the Tucker Design Awards event, BSI recognized Peter Walker, FASLA as their 2014 Bybee Prize winner. Given in honor of the late James Daniel Bybee, a respected and long-standing member of the Building Stone Institute, the Bybee Prize is awarded to an individual architect or landscape architect for a body of work executed over time and distinguished by outstanding design and use of natural stone.
Jurors for this year's Tucker Design Awards were Blair Kamin , Architecture Critic, Chicago
Tribune; Duncan G. Stroik , Principal, Duncan G. Stroik Architect, LLC in South Bend, IN; and Peter Lindsay Schaudt , FASLA FAAR, Partner, Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects,
Chicago, IL. “Having our jurors at the event to present the awards to their peers while viewing amazing images of the projects and listening to their comments surrounding winning project selection is memorable to our winners,” said BSI Executive Vice President Jane Bennett.
“Tucker Design Award winning projects typically exhibit exceptional collaboration of the design teams with stone suppliers and installers, which is something our industry advocates and BSI celebrates,” added Bennett. Editorial coverage of the 2014 Tucker Design Award projects and the Bybee Prize award recipient is the exclusive content of BSI's spring issue of Building Stone
Magazine . The digital edition - with expanded project information, photos, interviews, and contributor resources - is available on the BSI website. Buildingstoneinstitute.org
