Course Description: Basic grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary of the
Spanish language. Includes the study of the Spanish-speaking cultures. Practice
of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Prerequisites: None.
Course Competencies:
1. Demonstrate comprehension of written and oral passages that include
biographical information, basic questions and descriptions, short narratives, brief
dialogues, survival vocabulary, and current events.
2. Compose written passages that include biographical information, basic
questions and descriptions, short narratives, brief dialogues, survival
vocabulary, and current events.
3. Ask and answer oral questions to satisfy basic needs, express biographical
information, provide short descriptions, and participate in very simple
conversations.
4. Identify cultural aspects of the target language.
Attendance: There is a ten-absence limit. Make-up work is only available to
students with excused absences. It is the student’s responsibility to find out the
work that was missed during the excused absence. Homework due the day you
were gone is due the day you return, unless absent three or more days. Since
tests and quizzes are announced well in advance, plan on taking them with the
class unless you were gone several days.
Students needing extra clarification on assignments may meet with the teacher and
make appropriate adjustments according to the needs of the student and at the
discretion of the teacher.

A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = <60%
Grading is done on a point system. Students can expect to be graded on class
performance and oral participation, homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and inclass activities. Your semester grade is made up of the following:
Quarter 1-40%
Quarter 2-40%
Final Exam-20%
Your semester final will consist of an oral exam, a written exam, and a multiplechoice exam.
