DublinCompare Semantic diversity within collections Weagley, Gaches, and Park (2010) compare implementations of the DublinCore metadata schema across six collections of moving images. Their discussion summarizes usage of DublinCore elements in the different collections and points out inconsistencies within collections for various elements. To better understand the effects of such inconsistencies, we’ll look at several records from five of the collections compared by Weagley, Gaches, and Park. (The Australian Center for the Moving Image seems to have changed its metadata implementation since 2009, when the data for the study was collected.) We’ll tour these records as a group, but here are the items that we’ll discuss, in case you want to return to them later. Ball State sample records 1. Semantic diversity across collections The following table compares sample records from five of the six collections examined by Weagley, Gaches, and Park (2010) for their implementations of the Dublin Core schema. Mappings were created based on those described in Weagley, Gaches, and Park. (For context, the full sample records from each collection’s Web site follow the table.) Imagine a new collection that aggregates all five of these collections, in which the Dublin Core manifestations of each record as represented in the table appear together in a unified database. We’ll consider these questions: How do you perceive the effects of differing interpretations/applications of the Dublin Core schema in such a federated collection? Where does semantic diversity cause problems for interacting with the resources, and what is the nature of these problems? Considering our comparative tours of multiple records from within each of the five collections in the table, would you say that the semantic diversity across collections is substantively different from that within collections? Where does semantic diversity not matter much? Does semantic diversity ever enhance one’s experience with the resources, and if so, how? If you were developing such a federated database, what would be your approach to managing semantic diversity, given that “using a standard schema” and “developing guidelines for applying a standard schema” might produce a situation like the example? Camera roll 010 is one of a group of camera rolls (010, 011, 012, 013, 024A) showing Keith Roberts and Dave Bland working in the timber using a horse to skid logs. Horses and mules were used to skid logs in terrain where it was impractical to use a mechanical skidder, or in areas where trees were being selectively cut and where mechanical skidders would cause too much damage to the surrounding forest. Camera roll 010 contains shots of the horse skidding logs to and loading logs. The roll starts with the early part of the day when only a few logs have been loaded onto the truck. The temperature, however, was already in the nineties. Dave is working the horse and Keith is loading the truck. 1. Skidding log with horse, loading log on truck (2 shots) -- 2.
