Job Description Job title: Department/School: Grade: Location: Industrial Partnerships Manager Research & Innovation Services (RIS) 8 University of Bath Campus Job purpose RIS’ mission is to support and stimulate research income and impact. The purpose of this role is to facilitate/develop new, and maximise current, research-based relationships with partner organisations, primarily businesses; working with academic staff to establish and maintain senior and operational level professional relationships; to secure research income which is also counted as “HEBCIS eligible income”, e.g. KTPs and direct industry funding. A secondary purpose is to facilitate research collaborations, working with Research Development Managers, relevant to funding bodies such as the Research Councils, Innovate UK and the European Commission. Source and nature of management provided Head of Research Development and Knowledge Exchange. Staff management responsibility This post will at times be required to line-manage up to three staff. Special conditions There will be the requirement for regular UK travel. Main duties and responsibilities 1 Leadership and Management To drive the expansion of the University’s externally funded research work with employers and other organisations at a local, regional, national and international level through the development of potentially large and complex research contracts in collaboration with colleagues in RIS and across the University. To take responsibility for supporting academics in developing and maximising external relationships with employers, businesses and other organisations who will invest in research. To exercise sound judgement in respect of the viability and risks of proposed ‘contract research’ provision and ensure that Heads of Departments/Deans are aware of possible developments. To liaise with professional bodies to raise understanding and the profile of the potential contribution of the University to research partnership work. To develop and maintain University processes for capturing and recording data about research partnerships, overseeing relevant annual returns and disseminating data as appropriate. To deliver key performance indicators for research income across the University and take responsibility for measuring performance against these parameters. Page 1 2 Financial Management To be responsible for ensuring research income is maximised with the goal of 100% FEC, priced in accordance with the University’s financial procedures. To liaise with appropriate bodies/organisations at a senior level to secure funding. 3 Strategic Planning To deliver plans for growing KTP and direct business research income, reflecting the University’s objectives and strategy. To provide advice and guidance to departments in the preparation of research plans involving KTPs and direct business research income. To work with academic staff to write, deliver and manage proposals for KTPs and direct business research income. To develop and maximise relationships in accordance with RIS strategy. To undertake market analysis to identify new clients and new technological demands. To develop a thorough understanding of the University’s research portfolio. To enable cross selling where employers do not want KTPs or to directly fund research projects, e.g. research collaborations and PGRs. To work to provide an integrated service offer across the teams within RIS. 4 People Management To manage all staff as delegated by the Head of Team, including performance management, staff development, performance review and induction. To plan and manage the use of all delegated resources associated with acquiring KTPs and direct business research income. To communicate the University's strategic goals and new policy developments to reportees and explain the drivers for change. To ensure effective communication between academic, research partners and administrative work associated with KTPs and direct business research income. To encourage the sharing of good practice and the effective use of resources in respect of securing KTP and direct business research income. To promote cross-department/faculty/subject working. 5 Governance To take responsibility for compliance with funding body requirements for KTPs. To represent RIS at relevant committees, working parties and groups of the University as required. 6 Marketing and Communications To take responsibility for the development and promotion of the internal and external profile of KTPs and direct business research income, ensuring effective communication channels and appropriate interaction with facultybased staff, professional bodies, funding agencies and employers. You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager. You are required to follow all University policies and procedures at all times and take account of University guidance Page 2 Person Specification Criteria: Qualifications and Training A first degree Essential A postgraduate qualification Criteria: Knowledge and Experience Demonstrable partnership development skills evidenced by negotiating significant research programmes between HEIs and industry partnerships Significant experience of attracting funding and delivery of projects within designated resources An understanding of academic/industry collaboration either through experience in the HE sector or from an industrial/commercial perspective, and familiarity with InnovateUK and national policies relating to KTPs within the sector A strong academic or professional track record gained at an appropriate level, ideally at the industry-university interface, including a successful record in writing and preparation of funding proposals to industry and KTPs.
