Wellcome Library 1 Photographing Foldouts, 2015 Photographing Foldouts (FO) of Various Sizes: FO extended beyond the text block in single or multiple directions 1. One to three directional FO covering one side of the item & opening angles between 90° and 110° How to hold the items as flat as Pictures and explanations possible during digitizing safely 1. Place the item on the black backgroud sheet. 2. Support the side of the item with a block of plastazote so that the opening angle of the item is between 90° and 110°. Black Tuf-Flock (black vinyl-backed photography background) Wellcome Library 2 Photographing Foldouts, 2015 3. Place appropriate blocks/ sheets of plastazote around and under the FO. 4. Place the glass on top supported by the blocks of plastazote. Placing sheets/blocks of plastazote around and under the FO is essential for the FO to be supported safely and to minimise pressure during digitizing. The glass is holding the object down but it only just touches it and the object is not fully pressed down. The spine area (both binding and text block) will risk breaking if the full weight of the glass presses down on them. Two-directional FO Three-directional FO Wellcome Library 3 Photographing Foldouts, 2015 2. Wellcome Library 4 Photographing Foldouts, 2015 Three-directional FO Note that Large tears will be mended prior to digitizing. Items are assessed in advance by Conservation with Digitisation Project Coordinator (DPC). Handling is supported by DPC where necessary. Once an item is placed on the black background sheet, do not move the item when re-positioning is required. To adjust move the black background sheet to minimise damage. Camera angles and lighting are adjusted to minimise handling of the items.
