Biography Information for The following article was copied from a Church history book
Published in 1986 for the 'Belvidere Congregational United Church of Christ' the former
'Belvidere Methodist Episcopal Church.' Titled 'A Century of Caring and Sharing'
Page 6 The M. E. Nebraska Conference Journal, Hastings District said: At Belvidere a new
church 30x50, was dedicated August 8th. The debt is all provided for, including what is due the
church Extension Society. The building cost $1,400.00.' Jesse Jay of Belvidere is listed as a local
preacher in the same conference journal.
Page 7 Belvidere a Point on this circuit makes and urgent request to set apart by itself and have a
minster live in place; and I believe that the interest of the church demands their request be
granted. This request was granted and L.. D. Willard became the first resident clergy of the
Belvidere M. E. Church from September 1891 to September 1892, at which time the district
Superintendent reported the following in the journal: 'Belvidere is a work cut off from
Alexandria last year. It has been supplied by L. D. Willard, a local deacon in our church. Souls
have been converted, a new parsonage purchased and the work is in healthy condition.' Jesse Jay
was still a local preacher, also Brother Willard received $500 salary plus house rent $72.
Page 9. Rev. Jesse Jay, a local preacher in the Belvidere Church for many years, One most
Christlike men with whom he has yet formed an acquaintance.' Rev. Jesse Jay was born of
Quaker parentage and converted in a Methodist camp meeting and joined the church soon after.
He filled the offices of class leader, steward, trustee and local preacher, according to his
obituary. He was a useful member in and a strong supporter of the M. E. Church in every way.
Page 207-208
The Clay-Harris and Jay-Hitt Families The Jesse Jay family lived on a farm 2 miles west and
half mile north of Belvidere. The family consisted of Jesse's wife Jane, and six daughters,
Augusta Jessie, Alazanna Labitha, Euphema Iowa, Julia Virginia, Lydia, Lucy and one son
Orville. The household also included Grandmother Able, mother of Mrs Jesse Jay. Jesse, in
addition to being a farmer, served as a local Methodist minister, serving the Belvidere Methodist,
back before they had a building in which to worship, when they held meetings in the
schoolhouse, and someone had to lead the singing without the benefit of an organ.
Living on father west, just east of Carlton, Nebraska, on a timber claim was the Joseph Hitt
family. Joseph was married to Mary Wolverton on September 25,1851 in Astoria, Illinois and
they came west in the latter 1870's settling just east of Carlton. They had eleven children, two
dying in infancy, William, Angeline, Francis, James, Thomas, Levi, Barton, Charles, David, Era,
and Edgar Albert. The sons of the Hitt family often pitched in and helped Jesse Jay with the farm
work, Jesse having only the one son. Eventually four of these Hitt brothers, Will, Marion, Alex
and James Edgar, hiked down the creek and railroad tracks to court and eventually to marry four
Jay sisters, Augusta, Alazanna, Virginia, and Euphema James Edgar Hitt and Euphemia Iowa Jay
were married on September 24,1878 at Hebron, Nebraska. Their first home was a sod house near
Carleton. Their daughter, Lucy, born near Carleton just missed being born in the sod house. They
moved from it shortly before her birth. The family moved to Doniphan, Nebraska where much
spent most of her girlhood. She joined the Methodist Church when she was 13 years of age. Her
mother passed away a the age of 36 years, when Lucy was 13 leaving in addition to Lucy, a two
year old daughter, Gracie, and two sons, Charles and Tom. Her father eventually has two more
wives.
Lucy became a school teacher, teaching in Hall county for one term, and later coming to
Belvidere to make her home with her double cousin, Ala Marion Hitt-Leslie, Wife of George
Leslie. She taught three terms of school in Thayer County in the Hubbell Nebraska area. She met
Henry Clay in the early 1900,s and they were married in the Belvidere Methodist Church on May
05,1904. Henry was the son of Benjamin F. Clay and Susan Ella Harris-Clay, he was born may
11,1879 at Odell, Illinois. The family moved to Thayer County in 1880. In addition to Henry, the
Benjamin F. Clay family consisted of Herman A. and Lewis, both whom died in infancy, and
Edith and Susie. In 1881, when a band of Salvation Army soldiers held revival meetings in
Belvidere, Henry's father B. F. Clay, confessed Christ as his personal Savior and joined the
Belvidere Methodist Episcopal Church and remained a faithful member until his death on July
07,1928, at he age of 79 years, 4 months and 18 days. His funeral was conducted at the church
by Pastor Peter Davis. Henry's mother, Susan Ellen Harris-Clay, daughter of Elijah and
Susannah Harris, was born at Burr Oak, Michigan on February 02,1854, and later moved with
her family to La Salle County, Illinois. On December 14,1883, she was married to B. F. Clay and
they lived six years on a farm near Odell, Illinois, before coming to Nebraska in 1880. They
lived near Belvidere all the rest of their lives. Susan was converted in early childhood and was a
devoted, consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, until her death on February
06,1929. Her funeral was held at the Methodist Church in Belvidere with Rev James H Fowler
conducting the services. Her parent's funerals were also held in the church and they are buried in
the Belvidere cemetery. Her brother, Hiram H. Harris, was a charter member of the Belvidere
Methodist Episcopal Church. The daughters of Benjamin and Susan Harris-Clay, Edith and
Susie, attended church in Belvidere with their parents, also. Edith became the second wife of
John Brumbaugh of Chester, Nebraska. They had a daughter, Alta Mae. Susie Clay, after several
years of teaching school, married George Spafford, a widower, and they farmed near Chester and
Steele City, Nebraska. They had no children. Edith and Susie are both buried in the Chester,
Nebraska cemetery.
Now on with the life of Henry and Lucy Hitt-Clay. After their marriage, they lived on several
different farms near Belvidere. They were the parents of Erma, homer and Carroll, who were all
Belvidere High School graduates. The Henry Clay family were active members of the Methodist
Episcopal Church and served the church in various offices through the years. Their daughter,
Erma became a school teacher, and married Floyd Birdsall in 1943. They spent eighteen
summers as State Fire lookouts on Mt Diablo in California. After her husbands death in 1970,
she moved back to Hebron, Nebraska, and now resides in the Blue Valley Nursing Home there.
Homer attended Hastings Business College and married Mable Ochsner. They had three
children, Connie, Doris and Gordon. Homer was engaged in the automotive business and they
lived at Hastings, Grand Island and Atlantic, Iowa. Homer passed away in 1987. Carroll Clay
attended the University of Nebraska. He married to Rita O. Boyle. They had two children,
Theresa and Thomas. He obtained a civil service job and lived in Washington D.C. for many
years. He passed away a few years ago. Henry and Lucy celebrated thier Golden Wedding
anniversary in 1954, with a mock wedding in the church, with Henry wearing a straw sailor hat
and Lucy wearing a lace curtain for a wedding veil. Present at the Golden Anniversary dinner
and open house at their home were their children from California on the west coast; from
Washington D.C., on the east coast; and from Hastings, Nebraska, in the Midwest. Also present
were numerous friends and other relatives and a former pastor, Rev. J. Bruce Wylie. Henry
passed away in 1960 and Lucy in 1973 and both funerals were held at the church in Belvidere.
Since none of their children or grand children live in Belvidere. Their deaths ended a long line of
dedicated Methodists, associated with the church in Belvidere, which included Lucy's Maternal
grandfather, Jesse Jay; Henry's grandparents, Elijah and Susannah Harris; his parents, Benjamin
and Susan Harris-Clay and his uncle Hiram H. Harris. All of these dedicated people are buried in
the Belvidere Cemetery. ** ** **

FIRST REGIMENT
Wabasha county was well represented in the war of the rebellion, and responded nobly to the call
for men. Although so young prior to these stirring events (the grandest in the history of the
world), it furnished its full quota of heroes, who fought and bled for their country, returning in
honor to their homes, or laid down their lives as martyrs in a glorious cause. It would not have
seemed strange if many beheld the approach of that terrible conflict with indifference, and felt a
want of patriotic ardor, that characterized older and more favored sections. But if all the facts
could be set forth of public and personal sacrifice, of heroic devotion and persistent efforts by the
people of this country, it would not only compare favorably with the most loyal communities of
the land, but make a valuable contribution to the history of the state; and a careful and just
recognition of the claims of each locality reflects great honor upon each neighborhood. In the
beginning of the war, when no bounties were offered, and patriotism was the sole incentive to
enlistments, many volunteers went from their homes to the villages which received credit for the
names enrolled, so that when it was found necessary to order a draft, the claims of such localities
were ignored, consequently the draft fell upon some communities already decimated by
voluntary contributions. Next to our religion, the claims of country should undoubtedly receive
our ardent attention, and it was this interest that caused the American people, irrespective of
party or party interests, to respond so promptly, and sacrifice so mush in such a cause. But as
citizens of the world, caring nothing for country or locality, or the welfare and prosperity of one
state or section more than another, men would cease to be regarded as patriotic; and no matter
how philanthropic they might regard themselves, without some special consideration for the
country of our birth or adoption, and of its success and happiness, we should scarcely be
considered good citizens.
The 1st regt. Minn. Vols. was mustered into service April 29, 1861, and it is a noteworthy fact
that it was the first one tendered to President Lincoln upon his calls for troops after the attack
upon Fort Sumter, April 19, 1861.
It was ordered to Washington, June 14, and participated in the battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861.
In that memorable battle the regiment lost one hundred and eighty-nine men. The bravery of its
officers and men in that engagement filled the whole country with admiration. Charge after
charge was made, and still the Minnesota First stood its ground, every man proving himself a
hero. The regiment participated also in the skirmish at Edward's Ferry, Maryland, October 22,
1861, guarding six miles of the Potomac in the battle of Yorktown, May 7, 1862; was in two
engagements at Fair Oaks, May 31 and June 1; in battles of White Oak Swamp and Nelson's
Farm, June 30, 1862; in the battle of Malvern Hill, July 31, 1862. In these last engagements the
regiment lost, in killed, wounded and missing, ninety-one men. October 7, 1862, it took part in a
heavy reconnaissance to Malvern Hill, also several severe skirmishes. August 30, 1862, it
reached Centreville, Virginia, and acted as rear guard of Gen. Pope's retreat from Fairfax Court
House to Chain Bridge; had several severe skirmishes; participated in battle of Antietam,
September 17, 1862; the first siege of Fredericksburg, December 11, 12, and 13, 1862; the
second Fredericksburg, May 3, 1863; also the fearful struggle of Gettysburg, July 2 and 3, 1863,
and was at Bristow Station, October 14, 1863. There is probably no regiment of the whole war
that shows a better record than that of the heroic Minnesota First. He appeared on the census of
1880; Thaddeus Hitt is found in Shible,Swift Co., Minnesota. age 47 head of household, married.

Feb 1892 at Rankin Co., Mississippi, at age 80. He was buried after 3 Feb 1892 at Concord

W.,
Samuel J., Edmund P., Sarah H., and John S (Jasper W. is believed to be Jasper David Hitt).
2. Solomon Jasper joined the Elington Baptist Church at Clinton, Alabama in 1851 and was
ordained by this church on 19 April 1852; with the Rev. E. B. Teague, pastor of Providence
Church, Sumter County, Alabama and Rev. William L. Boyd, pastor of Memphis Church,
Pickens County, Alabama, officiating.
3. Solomon and his family were living in Rankin County in 1860 where he was the pastor of
several churches.
4. Solomon lived in Clinton for about four years. In about 1856 he moved to Dallas County,
Alabama. In 1865 to Rankin County, Mississippi. The following is from the Minutes of the
Springfield Association which traces the career of Solomon:210
S. J. Hitt. The subject of this sketch was born in Laurens District, South Carolina, June
2, 1811, where he lived with his parents, David and Jane Hitt, until his 11th year, when, with
his parents he moved to Greene County, Alabama, where he grew to manhood, enjoying the
benefits of a common English education. He was fourth from the oldest of a family of ten
children, who grew to man and womanhood, all of whom he survived except the two
youngest; one of whom is still living. He passed the early years of his manhood in teaching
and farming until 25 years of age, when he was married to Eliza Strother Everett, November
10, 1836. To this union, there were nine children born, seven boys and two girls, all of
whom, (save one who died in infancy) lived to man and womanhood, and six are still living,
three of whom are members of the Baptist Church.
Rev. S. J. Hitt joined the Baptist church of Christ at Clinton, Greene County, Ala., early in
the year 1851, and was ordained to the full work of the gospel ministry by the same church
on the 18th of April, 1852, Rev. E. B. Teague, pastor of Providence Church, Sumter County,
Ala., and Rev. Wm. L. Boyd, pastor of Memphis Church, Pickens County, Ala., officiating.
He was actively engaged in the ministry in Alabama during the four years he lived there until
1856. During those years he served the churches, viz: Clinton, Beulah, Buck Creek,
Cooksville, State Line and others not remembered.
In 1865 he moved with his family to Rankin County, Ms., where he soon arose toeminence as a
Baptist minister, receiving more calls than he could possibly fill. He has
supplied churches in four or five different counties, viz: Polkville, Mt. Carmel, Shiloh and
White Oak, in Smith County; Mountain Hill and Zion Hill, in Simpson County, Line Creek,
in Scott county, and others not remembered. Some of the above churches he werved fifteen
or twenty years successfully in the Master's cause until about three years before his death,
when declining health and old age put on the brakes and placed on his hitherto active life;
however, he continued t preach occasionally until two months before he died, and never
seemed satisfied to give up serving churches.
On the 17th of July, 1868, he lost the companion of his early life, death severing the tie,
and on the 22nd of July 1869, he was married to Miss Malvina McLehany. To this union
there were two children born, both girls, and both are living at this time - one married and
the other single; both are members of the Baptist church. On the 3rd of February, 1892, he
passed peacefully and gently fromthis life to enter that reward which Christ, the Lord, has
reserved for them that love Him and keep His commandments, aged eight years eight months
and one day, having been actively engaged in the ministry nearly forty years.

12. On 22 July 1872, Charles D. Hitt son of John G. Hitt purchased 49 36/100 acres of land in
Page 272
Randolph County, Arkansas. John must have been heir to his son's land after the son died
because on 22 October 1894, John G. Hitt and his wife Elizabeth Hitt deeded to F. C. Hulen of
Ripley County, Missouri, 49 36/100 acres of land for the sum of $200.00. This land described
as West fractional one half of SE quarter, Section 4, Township 21, Range 3E. Deed filed 10

Court Record, Book I, p. 227)
13. On 12 April 1883, John G. Hitt deeded to Andrew J. Whitehead (his son-in-law) 80 acres of

County, Arkansas Circuit Court Record, Book D, p. 585)
15. When John died he still owned 160 acres of land which was the homestead where he and his
wife lived until their deaths.
16. In the Probate Court of Clay County, Arkansas, the application for Letters of Administration
were filed on 8 February 1897; A. J. Whitehead, Adm. Many of John's children, both dead
and alive, were listed under heirs: Jim Hitt - Texas; Wm Hitt - (dead) children in Stoddard
County, Mo; Jno Hitt - (dead); Charles Hitt - (dead); Columbus Hitt - Palatka, Clay County,
Arkansas; D. M. Hitt - (Dead, Donna Marie wife of A. J. Whitehead); Nancy J. Hitt - (mother,

the probate court settlement of John's estate, the 160 acres of land on which John and Elizabeth
were living when he died, was awarded to his widow. John's personal property was divided
between his widow and his three living children: Jim M. who was living in Texas, Columbus L.
of Palatka, Arkansas, and W. R. McNabb who was the husband of Sarah Frances.
17. The probate record for John Hitt shows that (brother) Samuel Hitt, of Cape Girardeau
County,
filed an appeal to the Circuit Court from the judgement of the Probate Court. Samuel sued the
Hitt estate for $1940.87 which had been disallowed by the Probate Court. Also with the
Probate record for John was a note for $950 dated 3 April 1878 and signed by both John G.
Hitt, Sr., John G. Hitt, Jr. (both signed with an X) and C. Hitt. The note was witnessed by
Charley Hitt and T. J. Hitt. Samuel's suit was thrown out because of the statute of limitations
with no award.
18. There is a community cemetery named the Hitt Cemetery located at Success, Clay County,
Arkansas. It is located on land donated by John Green Hitt for the Hitt Baptist Church, school
and cemetery. The Church was destroyed by a storm, re-organized and relocated in Success.
John Green Hitt is believed to be buried in the Hitt Cemetery.
John’s first wife, Eunice Fidilla MILTON, was born on 12 July 1820 in New York.
1. The name Fidilla has been written as Phidilla, Venis F., Eunice F. and Fidilla. Fidilla is used
here because it appears this way on the marriage record.
2. Land sales and the divorce suit records give Fidilla's name as Eunice F. Hitt, therefore, Fidilla
must have been her middle name.
3. It is believed that Fidilla retained custody of her youngest son, John Franklin, after her divorce
from John Green Hitt.
