“Where Living Is Learning” Red Oak Primary School – Medium Term Planning Spring 1 2015 Year Year 4: Anglo-Saxons and the Scots (Topic/History) Animals and Living Things (Science) Sparkling start Science: Watch interesting Steve Irwin documentaries, looking at dangerous predators. Science: Fabulous Finish Children are to create a 5 minute class talk about an interesting predator of their choice. As Readers we will read information books about Saxons (Topic) about we will also read about predators, food chains and habitats (science). As Writers we will write information texts, stories and reports about the Saxons (topic) and predators and habitats (Science). Big Ideas As Mathematicians we will continue to develop our maths skills through Maths Makes Sense. As Scientists we will be learning how to group animals and plants in a variety of ways. We will explore groups of animals and their environments. We will learn about the importance of the environment and how it can pose dangers to living things. As Geographers we will locate different habitats of different predators, using maps and atlases. We will compare animals in the UK with animals found in different countries. We will use maps to search for rainforests and polar areas and describe the geographical features of those places. As Historians we will find out about: The Roman withdrawal from Britain and the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Scots invasions from, settlements and kingdoms. Anglo-Saxon art and culture. Christian conversions during Anglo Saxon times. As Artists we will create AngloSaxon patterns ( linked to Topic) and we will also create animal style patterns using printing and collage (linked to science). As Designers we will design and make a 3D habitat model for a predator. As Linguists we will develop our French skills. Further Opportunities As Sports stars we will be playing team games and practising our dance and gymnastics skills. We will also be swimming. In PSHE we will be looking at conservation, recycling and protecting the habitats and environment of animals and plants. We will read stories about the Anglo-Saxons. Readers Writers Communication We will write our own stories, reports and letters about The Anglo-Saxons (Topic) and we will also write about predators, habitats and the environment (Science). We will have class debates about conservation and pollution.
