BUSINESS PLAN Executive Summary Smart (Intelligent) Traffic will address traffic congestions in largely populated Cities with the view of reducing the amount of time motorists are exposed to toxic gas emitted from Cars, heavy duty trucks, trains. Emissions from automobile engines contain both primary and secondary pollutants which is a major cause of pollution in Cities and urban centres. Emitted fumes from cars contain dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons and particulates which are harmful to both people and the environment thus negatively impacting the climate change. Smart (Intelligent) Traffic is a solution that will harness the power of ICT to inform road users of the locations (junctions/towns/centers) with heavy traffic and also suggest alternative routes with less traffic congestion to prefered destinations. The proposed solution will reduce the time motorist take on the road thus the amount of gases emitted to the atmosphere. This will reduce the time motorists are exposed to toxic gases as a result of spending many hours in traffic jams. We hope that this solution will ultimately contribute to reduction/ slowing down of the effects toxic emissions have on road users and climate change. Smart (Intelligent) Traffic will use a network of cameras placed in strategic locations in the City including roads, junctions, and highways in and out of the city. An image processing algorithm will be designed to interpret the Images and videos captured by the camera with the view of determining the state of traffic in real time. A control centre will be established to manage the networks and camera feeds from a network of cameras. Information received at the control centre will be relayed to the cloud based application from which the road users will access real time traffic related information. Up to 53,000 deaths have been attributed to toxic gases emitted by cars in the United states alone (Caiazzo et al, 2013). Environmental protection agency estimates that and average car in the US emits as follows in one month; Hydrocarbons 2.80 grams/mile (1.75 g/Km) 77.1 pounds (35.0 kg) Carbon monoxide 20.9 grams/mile (13.06 g/Km) 575 pounds (261 kg) NOx 1.39 grams/mile (0.87 g/Km) 38.2 pounds (17.3 kg) Carbon dioxide - greenhouse gas 0.916 pounds per mile (258 g/km) 11,450 pounds (5,190 kg) Hydrocarbons 2.80 grams/mile (1.75 g/Km) 77.1 pounds (35.0 kg) The emission levels are expected to be worse for cities in the developing nations with large numbers of very old cars. Smart (Intelligent) Traffic will address the challenge by; Reducing average time cars take on the road hence reducing the amount of exhaust gasses emitted to the atmosphere by 20% and increase productivity for road users by at least 1 man hours in the next 3 years Reducing the time which motorists are exposed to toxic gases while in traffic jams by 1 hour in the next 3 years. The Initiative Smart (Intelligent) Traffic is a solution that will harness the power of ICT to inform road users of the locations (junctions/towns/centers) with heavy traffic and also suggest alternative routes with less traffic congestion to preferred destinations. Smart (Intelligent) Traffic will enable motorists to access information on traffic using their phones. Images from cameras will be processed from the control centre and relayed to the cloud based portal from which users are able to access the state of traffic in real time. Users will have access to information on state of traffic on specific routes and locations on cities. The proposed solution will reduce the time motorist take on the road thus reduction in the amount of gases emitted to the atmosphere and exposure to toxic gases. There are few Cities and towns in developing countries that use smart intelligent traffic to manage traffic. Where Systems are in place, they are used to monitor defaulting road users, monitor security and in some cases used by city management to plan for future road network expansion. The novelty in Smart (Intelligent) Traffic is relaying of data to the cloud portal and integration of mobile phones to enable users to access information city traffic. Our Vision: “Greener Cities for sustainable development” Mission: “Mitigating climate change through better traffic management” Smart (Intelligent) Traffic has great potential for success especially in developing countries like Uganda that is still grappling with challenges associated with traffic management. The solution will also be of interest to Governments that are passionate about reducing green gas emission to the atmosphere. Illnesses and deaths associated with exhaust gas emissions will be reduced thus the need for every city to adopt the technology. Being a new concept, some cities and governments may not be willing to take up the concept. Some authorities may not be willing give third parties access to their infrastructures and systems including data centres, Network and cameras. We therefore plan to involve key stakeholders in the initial planning and development of the idea. This will help them to improve the idea and buy in to the project. We plan to propose co-ownership to city projects so that we the implementers are looked as partners instead of being looked at as third parties. Implementing Smart (Intelligent) Traffic will require the following skills; ● Systems Analysis and Design: identifying and articulating the requirements for the system requires the services of systems analyst. ● Network Administration: Skills to design, deploy, manage and administer a network and related communications between the cameras, data centres and the online portal. ● Programming Skills: These skills are required to support the development of Applications, interfaces, algorithms to support the the system. ● Database Management: this will be required to facilitate the designing and relevant databases for the system ● Managing Cameras: Technical skills to administer and maintain cameras Partnerships and collaborations with the city authorities is a must if the project is to succeed. Other connections necessary include manufacturers and or Suppliers of equipment (Cameras, Network and communications equipment, data Centre equipment), and other authorities in charge of roads. The intellectual property rights will only be applicable to the web and mobile applications. We hope to consult on how best to acquire and safeguard the intellectual property rights. A Head office will be setup in Kampala, Uganda. The head office will work will have a technical support team that will support the deployment and Implementation of Smart (Intelligent) Traffic. The Head office will establish working relationship with suppliers and manufactures of equipment that support Smart (Intelligent) Traffic Applications. Smart (Intelligent) Traffic Application will be available at APPS store for download by end users. Our Target market/groups are in two levels; 1) The City Authorities: We will work with the city authorities to provide deploy a centralised database application to capture feeds from cameras. City Authorities will want to connect with city dwellers by making services closer to them (Mobile Phones) 2) The end users: (Motorists/City Dwellers, Traffic controllers, and Planners): The Smart (Intelligent) Traffic Mobile Application will be made available on the APPS store for end users to download. We will need to collect data on the number of residents in each city, Number of cars and car ownership, information on roads in cities, Traffic flow statistics in various routes in the cities, etc. Some of our competitors in Uganda include Radio Stations that provide traffic updates on selected locations in the city. I am not aware of any Mobile Application that provides real time traffic updates with information on possible alternative routes. Our marketing strategy is as follows; Product: Smart (Intelligent) Traffic Mobile application is a unique product that will provide motorists access to real time information on the state traffic in the city. The product will be the firsts of its kind in Kampala City. Price: The Smart (Intelligent) Traffic Application will cost approximately USD 2 on the Appstore. Our price will be very competitive and our break-even will come with the large numbers of users downloading the application. Place: Our product will initially be available in Kampala after which it will be rolled out to other cities that sign up. Promotion: We hope to promote the solution on online platforms including social media, and Google. We will also engage city authorities directly. Social Purpose Communities in Large Cities and Humanity in General which comes with mitigation of climate change will benefit from this cause. There is a need for a social enterprise because Climate Change affects all humanity hence the need for collective action to combat its effects Smart (Intelligent) Traffic will meet the identified need through provision of a platform for city dwellers to contribute to the reduction of gases emitted to the atmosphere by spending less hours on the road. it also reduces the time people are exposed to toxic gasses while in traffic jams. The time saved will be utilized productively. We intend to measure the social impact by monitoring the number of illnesses and deaths associated with exhaust gas emissions. The quantities of gases emitted to the atmosphere after deploying Smart (Intelligent) Traffic will be compared with emission levels in the previous years before implementing Smart (Intelligent) Traffic. Support is essential for the success of every idea. There will be need work with health agencies to determine the number of illnesses and deaths resulting from toxic gases emissions. There will also be need to for technologies to measure pollution levels. We will need to work with the relevant authority to make it possible.
