Return to Sender Essay:
Often in works of literature a character offers support to other characters in the
story. The book Return to Sender is about an eleven year old boy who is desperately in
need of someone to help him in the farm his grandfather left back after he died. Tyler
offers his support to other characters in the book by helping them. One of the characters
that Tyler helps is his father. During the book his father has an accident. Another
character Tyler helps through out the book is a character named Mari. In my following
paragraphs I would identify Tyler, I would describe what support they offered, to who
they offered it, and why this support was important to the story.
Tyler is an American boy who lives with his mother and father in Vermont. His
family owns a farm and this farm is everything to Tyler. Tyler is a very hard worker in
the book. He usually spends his free time working in the farm. He’s very helpful and he
always tries to help people out.
Before the accident, Tyler use to help his father in the farm milking the cows.
After the accident, Tyler worries about loosing his farm after his grandfather dies and his
father is unable to work in the farm anymore. During the accident Tyler helps out by
calling 911. He also helps out Mari by giving her 500 dollars to help free her mother from
the coyotes because she was kidnapped to be sold into slavery. He helped out Mari’s
family by offering a job because they were illegal immigrants.
These supports were very important to the story because they helped construct the
story. This made the story become serious. Mari problem about being illegal immigrants
was what helped built the conflict of the story. These supports were also important to the
story because they were able to save the farm. Mari family were happy because they got
to returned back to Mexico.
This is a very serious story, it deals with a conflict that is happening now in our
everyday life. The issue with being illegal and not having any documents is a enormous
problem. You think that you are coming here to get a better life and you find many
obstacles in the way. So, you have to risk yourself and take all the opportunity that are
offered to you without looking back at what might happened. This is exactly what Mari
and her family did and they were successful.
