Dear Senior School Parents/Carers
Australia’s development has been enhanced by the contributions of many notable people throughout its history. People have become famous in fields such as sport, exploration, the arts, entertainment, literature, politics, science and inventions. Many contributions to the world’s development have originated in Australia.
Throughout the term senior students have been learning about all things Australian with a focus on significant Australians who have helped shape our nation. These significant Australians we call ‘Notables’.
On Thursday 29 th March senior students will be required as part of their assessment to participate in a ‘Day of the Notables’ to be held here at school.
Your child is required to choose a notable personality who has left an indelible mark on our country. They are required to research how this individual has contributed to our country and managed to inspire others with whom they have come in contact.
This information needs to be organised for presentation in his/her classroom. Posters, pictures and factual information are required to assist with the display. It is essential that your child dress up as their chosen notable personality.
Each ‘notable’ will have a series of 10 open ended questions in a container on their display. The ‘notable’ is required to research answers to these questions so they are confident with responses to the audience.
Examples of open-ended questions:
What were Mary Mackillop’s achievements?
What does the McGrath Foundation stand for?
Why did Fiona Wood create ‘spray on skin’?
The audience will select two or three questions and quiz the ‘Notable’ on these questions.
There will be time provided for students to work on this task in school but the majority of research and display should be made at home.
A list of notable Australians and suggested web addresses is posted on the year 5 and year 6 school websites to assist your child with selection.
Good luck and have fun.
Reminder -
Project due: Thursday 29 th 2012 to enable students to set up in the classroom ready for Tuesday’s presentations.
