Welcome new HES parents!
Here are few things you might want to know right away…
School hours:
Drop-off is from 7:40 to 8:10 a.m. Students start
being dismissed to carpool and buses at 2:45 p.m.
Students are considered tardy if they arrive after 8:10
and need to be walked into the office to be signed in by
a parent if they arrive late.
On early release days, students start being dismissed at
12:20 p.m.
Bus routes:
Bus information should be posted on the
HES website (address below). The WCPSS
transportation number is 919-554-8631 if you
have a bus issue.
School year calendar & lunch menu:
You can get both of these items at the Wake
County School System website –
www.wcpss.net/parents/
Before & After School Care info:
The YMCA does a daycare program at our school.
In addition, a variety of local daycares offer
pickup from HES including :
KinderCare - 919-570-3401
Kids R Kids - 919-453-2543
Primrose - 919-453-2554
Funtastic Kids - 919-453-6445
Boys & Girls Club - 919-556-7266
Carpool – How does it work and when
should I get here?
You can get a carpool number for your
family from the front office. That number
hangs from your mirror and alerts our staff
and your student that you have arrived.
For morning carpool, parents should not get
out of the car. HES staff will help your child
out and shut the door if needed. Please turn
right at the stop sign when leaving morning
carpool and go through the bus loop.
For afternoon carpool, you will see two lines
of cars forming through our bus loop when
you arrive. HES staff will direct you on
where to go and when your line should
move. The children are dismissed out of the
end of the K/1 hallway. If your child isn’t
ready when you pull up, please proceed to
the waiting area on the grass.

PEP RALLIES…
Putting the F-U-N in HES!
We typically have Academic Pep Rallies every
other month or so at HES and they are FULL of
FUN! Teachers will let you know when one is
coming up. You are welcome to dress your child in
HES Spirit Wear or any red, white and blue – let
them go nuts as the student who is most
representative of our school get the Spirit King or
Queen Award! The class with the most Spirit gets
an award too! These are for students only (no
parents due to fire codes.)
Your student will receive a chain necklace and
teachers nominate students for the following
awards received during the Pep Rally:
 Citizenship-Awarded to students who
repeatedly demonstrate cooperation, good
manners, respect for others, and responsibility for
their work and behavior.
 Most Improved-Students who have shown
improvement in their academic work.
 Effort- Awarded to students who exhibit a strong
desire to do well in their academic work.
 Academic Award (1-5 grades)-Awarded to
students who have a combination of 3’s and at
least one 4 on their report card for the 9-week
period.
 Quality Work (Kindergarten)-Awarded to
students who have demonstrated a high level of
neatness in their work, correctness in their work,
and pride in their work.
 Character-Students who best exhibit any of our
character traits: respect, responsibility, courage,
kindness, self-discipline, integrity, perseverance,
and/or good judgment.
 Attendance-Students who have no tardies or
absences during the 9-week period.
 Principal’s Award-A student that exemplifies an
outstanding HES student.
The winners are announced and given links to put
on their necklaces for the awards they have won.
Ask your student about these fun events
throughout the year. They’ll have lots to tell you!
NEW PARENTS SPECIAL EDITION
Registering to Volunteer
Volunteers are welcome at HES and we
hope you’ll be involved with our school
and your child’s classroom. All
volunteers must be approved by Wake
County each year before they can begin
helping at the school.
We will let you know when the school
computers are ready for volunteer online
registration. Often you can take care of
this during Open House or some other
time in the first month of school. You
should only need your driver’s license
number to fill out the online form.
Volunteer approval typically takes about
2-4 weeks.
The Heritage Elementary PTA
We will be sending home info on the PTA
but here’s a short summary for you:
 Joining the PTA (for only $6) gives you
a VOICE and a VOTE in what events we
do and how fundraising dollars are spent.
 We do have a rebates program we hope
you will participate in right away –
send in Box Tops with your child, register
your Harris Teeter VIC card with us
(form will be coming home) and assign
your Target card to our school.
From designing the yearbook to planning
our school book fair, spirit nights at local
restaurants, HEStival spring fling and Fall
fun run, we have a LOT of areas for parents
to get involved. Our PTA is enthusiastic and
involved, helping make HES a great
community school we are all proud to be a
part of! We hope you’ll join us this year!
