Fish Biologist (R15-252) This Biologist is the principal contributor to fish passage evaluations required by the Pelton Round Butte FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) license on the Deschutes River. Providing statistical analysis and data management expertise, they would manage large databases and conduct statistical analyses of fish passage and telemetry data, implement and refine study plans to successfully evaluate fish passage systems and prepare reports to submit to the natural resource agencies and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Other duties include assisting in the water quality program with reservoir studies, representing PGE at agency meetings and assisting with fisheries field work such as snorkel surveys, electrofishing and telemetry studies. Top candidates will typically have: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in fisheries/aquatic sciences or related field/degree, include a broad range of course work in fisheries, aquatics, limnology and quantitative sciences. 5+ years of work experience in a fisheries/aquatics related position, preferably related to trout, steelhead and salmon populations and life histories. Excellent statistical data analysis and technical writing skills. Excellent data management and database skills. Excellent computer application skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Ability to use specialized statistical and telemetry software. Good working knowledge of hydroelectric facilities and fish passage systems. Good working knowledge of fisheries/aquatic sciences methodologies and techniques. Good working knowledge of environmental regulations and regulatory constraints. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to appropriately evaluate company business needs and potentially competing viewpoints of regulatory agencies, environmental interest groups, and the public. Strong public speaking skills. This position also requires: The ability to work out-of-doors in potentially adverse weather conditions, to work safely in and around standing and flowing waters, and the ability to hike in difficult terrain and brushy conditions. Must have the ability to operate power boats, pickup trucks and pull trailers. An Oregon Driver’s License (or the ability to obtain one) and a history of safe driving.
