QUALIFICATIONS









completion of Grade XII supplemented by graduation from a one year teacher assistant program
from a recognized community or technical college, or graduation from a one year program in an
area of specialty (Braille, Sign Language, TESL, etc.)
over 1 year of experience in a related setting
considerable first-hand knowledge of the student’s culture and heritage and value system (ELL
positions)
working knowledge of the district child abuse protocol and reporting procedures
considerable working knowledge of specialized equipment and procedures required by special
needs students
considerable working knowledge of students with multiple and/or severe disabilities
proven ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with all internal and external
contacts; demonstrates a helpful and pleasant manner in dealing with others
proven ability to work in a co-operative team situation offering assistance to co-workers as
required
proven ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing
GENERAL DESCRIPTION/DUTIES
Ability to work as part of an integrated learning services team, providing assistance to students with
special needs which may include:
 learning challenges, intellectual challenges, physical challenges, behavioural needs, visual and
hearing challenges
 proficiency with computers in order to assist students in using computer technology such as:
Successmaker, Cowriter, Pixwriter
Specific duties may include supporting students’ needs in the areas of:
 cultural support (Aboriginal, International Education and ELL positions)
 targeted instructional interventions for individual or small groups under the direction of the teacher
 observation, data collection and record-keeping
 communication and technology
 behaviour support (implementing behaviour plans and ensuring student safety)
 arrival and departure via bus or taxi transportation
 physical management of personal and health care routines as directed such as:
- glucose monitoring (assist students with blood testing using a glucometer); seizure
management; feeding; toileting; mobility; clothing; lifting; medication
 accompanying students and participating in community field trips to swimming pool, bowling, etc.

Provide general and academic support to special needs students in
integrated classrooms. Support may include personal care (hygiene),
computer skills (SuccessMaker, Boardmaker), behaviour management,
language stimulation, supervision of non-compliant and impulsive behaviour,
augmentative communication, fine and gross motor assistance and social
skills development.

Education Assistant – Special Classes
Under the general direction of the Principal, ability to provide assistance and
support through the implementation of individual educational programs
(IEP’s) for special needs students in a special program. The emphasis of the
program is to provide students with the appropriate social, motor, language,
and living skills for them to become integrated into the school and
community.
Provide general assistance to special needs students, including Dependent, in
the Resource Room - requires Resource Room experience – assist with lifting,
personal care, feeding and toileting - autism training and experience (or
willing to attend summer training institute in August) – compile student
assessments for reports – perform specialized health procedures (seizure
management, tracheotomy care, ventilator care and catheterization, etc.,
under written instructions of a physician) strong behaviour management
skills – knowledge of Success Maker program an asset - nutrition coursework
an asset - experience implementing gross motor exercises.
