3rd Stonehouse Elementary School Grade Social Studies Lesson Plan – Greece Prepared by: Molly Madden Context: This Social Studies lesson is a continuation of the unit on Greece for third graders at Stonehouse Elementary. There are 19 students in the class at various ability levels. This is an inclusion class with 7 students with individualized education plans. During Social Studies, one special education teacher accompanies the 3rd grade teacher. Objective: Given introduction vocabulary and concepts on human characteristics and adaptions to the environment, the students will match Ancient Greek occupation characteristics to the corresponding occupation. SOL: Social Studies 3.4 - The student will develop map skills by a) locating Greece; b) describing the physical and human characteristics of Greece; and c) explaining how the people of Greece adapted to and/or changed their environment to meet their needs. Materials: Occupation Cards, Matching worksheet, pencils, document camera, grapes, bread, olive oil, interactive notebooks, colored pencil. Approximate time required: 45 minutes Content and Instructional Strategies: 1. Have the “material managers” pass out interactive notebooks. Read and highlight the sections “Adaptations” and “Human Characteristics” as an introduction to vocabulary, resources, and the occupations related to Greece. Inform students that the resources available to Ancient Greeks shaped much of the way the lived, especially their job/occupations. 2. Tell students that we are going to play a Game Show and I need three volunteers to be our contestants. Take the three contestants out in the hallway and tell them that they will be assigned a profession (Trader, Farmer, or Shipbuilder). Inform them that they will be asked 10 questions (See attached) from the class and should answer the question with a “yes” or “no” depending on if it relates to their job. If they do not know, the questions and answers will be on the back of their card. 3. Inform the rest of the class that three special people from Ancient Greece have joined us for the class period. Tell the class that the contestants are eager to answer questions from them. Pass out a “Game Show” tracker worksheet. They will be asking the questions on the worksheet to the three contestants to try and figure out their job/occupation. Have the students put a “Yes” or “No” in the box based on their contestant’s response. Have a model chart on the document camera for students who need assistance or miss a contestant’s response. 4. After all of the questions have been asked, have the students guess what three jobs they believe each contestant has and record it on their worksheet. Call on students to share their predictions until students guess all occupations correctly. 5. Hold a brief discussion with students about why these professions are important to survive in Ancient Greece. Extension: Allow the class to sample grapes and olive oil with bread. Discuss why these particular plants were popular in Greece. Explain that these resources were often traded for other goods such as wheat and gold. Evaluation/Assessment: Whole group discussion, participation and engagement, worksheet. Differentiation and Adaptations: Three teachers will be in the classroom during this lesson allowing for additional assistant for students needing it.
