Stonehouse Elementary School
Grade Social Studies Lesson Plan – Greece
Prepared by: Molly Madden
Context:
This Social Studies lesson is a continuation of the unit on Greece for third
graders at Stonehouse Elementary. There are 19 students in the class at
various ability levels. This is an inclusion class with 7 students with
individualized education plans. During Social Studies, one special
education teacher accompanies the 3rd grade teacher.
Objective:
Given introduction vocabulary and concepts on human characteristics and
adaptions to the environment, the students will match Ancient Greek
occupation characteristics to the corresponding occupation.
SOL:
Social Studies 3.4 - The student will develop map skills by a) locating
Greece; b) describing the physical and human characteristics of Greece;
and c) explaining how the people of Greece adapted to and/or changed
their environment to meet their needs.
Materials:
Occupation Cards, Matching worksheet, pencils, document camera,
grapes, bread, olive oil, interactive notebooks, colored pencil.
Approximate time required: 45 minutes
Content and Instructional Strategies:
1. Have the “material managers” pass out interactive notebooks. Read and highlight
the sections “Adaptations” and “Human Characteristics” as an introduction to
vocabulary, resources, and the occupations related to Greece. Inform students that
the resources available to Ancient Greeks shaped much of the way the lived,
especially their job/occupations.
2. Tell students that we are going to play a Game Show and I need three volunteers
to be our contestants. Take the three contestants out in the hallway and tell them
that they will be assigned a profession (Trader, Farmer, or Shipbuilder). Inform
them that they will be asked 10 questions (See attached) from the class and should
answer the question with a “yes” or “no” depending on if it relates to their job. If
they do not know, the questions and answers will be on the back of their card.
3. Inform the rest of the class that three special people from Ancient Greece have
joined us for the class period. Tell the class that the contestants are eager to
answer questions from them. Pass out a “Game Show” tracker worksheet. They
will be asking the questions on the worksheet to the three contestants to try and
figure out their job/occupation. Have the students put a “Yes” or “No” in the box
based on their contestant’s response. Have a model chart on the document camera
for students who need assistance or miss a contestant’s response.
4. After all of the questions have been asked, have the students guess what three jobs
they believe each contestant has and record it on their worksheet. Call on
students to share their predictions until students guess all occupations correctly.
5. Hold a brief discussion with students about why these professions are important to
survive in Ancient Greece.
Extension: Allow the class to sample grapes and olive oil with bread. Discuss why these
particular plants were popular in Greece. Explain that these resources were often traded
for other goods such as wheat and gold.
Evaluation/Assessment: Whole group discussion, participation and engagement,
worksheet.
Differentiation and Adaptations: Three teachers will be in the classroom during this
lesson allowing for additional assistant for students needing it. Grapes and olive oil will
be provided as a sensory component.
