Turner Exhibition Volunteering
General Information
The shifts for the Turner exhibition will be 1.5 hours. You will be expected to stay in the exhibition space for
the duration of that period.
Exit Surveys
There is an exit survey for the Turner exhibition that we would like volunteers to encourage visitors to fill
out. Copies of this will be given to you at the beginning of your shift. It is a good chance to get a record of
any feedback, positive or negative.
Dos and Don’ts of being an Exhibition Steward
Do:







Ask the Turner Gallery Steward if you need any assistance
Alert the Turner Gallery Steward should you have any concerns about security or visitor safety
Alert the Turner Gallery Steward if you need to be relieved or are having difficulties of any kind
Pass on to the Turner Gallery Steward any questions that you or visitors have, that you are unable
to answer
Visit the exhibition before your first shift to familiarise yourself with what is on display as well as the
shop and merchandise available
Be vigilant of the artefacts at all times
Assist visitors with opening the heavy gallery door into the exhibition galleries
Don’t:
 Allow photography of any of the Turner exhibition. Please politely ask visitors to refrain from taking
photographs.
 Take food or drink into the gallery and please make sure that visitors don’t either. If you are in need
of refreshment, especially in hot weather, please ask the Turner Gallery Steward for assistance.
 Read whilst you are stewarding (unless it is reading matter relevant to the Turner exhibition).
 Use a pen in the gallery, if making notes in the exhibition please use a pencil to write with.
Fire evacuation and security procedures
Please ensure you are aware of the location of fire alarms and fire exits and that you have read and signed
the fire and security procedure in reception.
Fire and security alarms
There are two alarms in the Museum: the Fire Alarm and the Security Alarm
Fire Alarm
The Fire Alarm is very high pitched and loud (almost painful to the ear) and when it goes off all the fire
doors at the museum shut. It is important to leave the building.
If you hear the fire alarm:
 Please remain calm
 Be aware that the automatic fire doors will shut around the museum. These doors will not be locked,
and can be pushed open as usual and will close again behind you.
 Please ask visitors to leave the building and then wait for the duty officer, who will tell you when you
can leave the building.
To Exit the building:
To the front of the Museum (via the main Museum entrance or the cafe door) and gather on the grass on
the right (away from the building), where there will be a member of Museum staff in a high visibility jacket.
They will check your name off the sign in list.
or to the back of the Museum (via the main Museum back door or the fire door by the Salisbury Gallery)
onto the back lawn, and gather by the Roman Statue, where there will be a member of Museum staff in a
high visibility jacket. They will check your name off the sign in list.
Only re-enter the building once you are told to do so by the Duty Officer.
Security alarm
The Security Alarm is far less intense, and intermittent.
If you hear the security alarm, it is very important to stay in the building and await further
instructions.
Thank you for volunteering as a steward for the Turner exhibition.
