Invitation to 2015 Provincial Championships The Ontario Student Debating Union and Lycée Claudel are pleased to invite you to the 2015 OSDU Provincial Championships to be held in Ottawa from February 27th-March 1st 2015. Only teams that qualified through Regional Qualifier Tournaments are eligible to attend this event. The top eight English teams will qualify for the National Championship to be held in Toronto, Ontario from April 24th-26th, 2015. The top Bilingual in Grade 11 or lower will be invited to represent Ontario at the next National Seminar (date and location TBA). This year’s provincial tournament will feature 5 rounds of debate, semi-finals and finals, as well as a dynamic guest speaker at our opening gala, accommodations in the beautiful Novotel Ottawa, a Saturday night social, and the opportunity to socialize with debaters from around the province, so get ready for a fun-filled weekend! Completed Registration and payment must be postmarked by January 31st, 2015 Note: York and Peel English teams (exclusively) must register by February 16th given the date of their regional tournament. Complete registration includes: Please check Item Instructions for registration 1) A completed registration form (Page 6 for students, Page 7 for adults) Email an electronic copy of these forms for each student to the Co-Tournament Director, Nicole Ratti, at n.laura.ratti@gmail.com by January 31st, 2015. 2) Signed waiver (Page 8) Please mail items 2), 3) and 4) to: 3) Signed code of conduct form (Page 9) Ms. Nicole Ratti ℅ Ontario Student Debating Union P.O Box 105 3353 Mississauga Road Mississauga, ON L5L 6A2 4) Send cheque for $340 per student, made payable to the “Ontario Student Debating Union”, note that “OSDU” is not sufficient on a cheque. Please note that the fee covers the hotel, all meals, and all events during the weekend. Participation in all events, staying at the hotel, and full payment of the $340 registration fee are mandatory for all debaters. Each region may send a designated number of teams who qualified through a regional tournament. The number of teams is allocated based on the number of schools registered with OSDU in that region. The number of teams (school pairs) allocated per region is as follows: English: Central Western Ontario Region: Toronto: Peel: York: Halton-Hamilton: GPR + St. Lawrence: Ottawa: 5 11 2 3 6 2 3 Four additional “wild card” teams will be issued to the teams in any region that have the highest average score to total 36 English Teams. Those teams will be contacted by the Tournament Directors individually. Style and Topic There will be two rounds of prepared debate and three rounds of impromptu debate. Please note that this is an expansion of the tournament from previous years, and all five rounds of debate will take place on Saturday, February 28th. The decision to add a fifth round has been made on the basis of feedback and demand from previous years. The semi-finals and finals will be based on impromptu motions. All debates will follow the Canadian National Debate Format. You can find the rules of this debating style, as well as other useful resources, at http://osdu.on.ca/0/wordpress/?page_id=19. Each team will debate BOTH sides of the prepared resolution. The prepared resolution is: THW Not Allow police officers to carry firearms while on regular patrol Cette chambre n’autoriserait pas les membres de la police d’avoir des armes à feux durant leurs patrouilles régulières. This resolution concerns the use of force in the Canadian Police force based on recent controversial issues of “police brutality”. This is largely to be debated as a principled case, and debaters should not focus too heavily on the implementation of a bill such as this. Proposition teams are, however, expected to prepare a clear model that explains the framework of when this would apply. Debaters are encouraged to examine the British model of not arming police officers on regular duty for an idea of how this has been applied. All the best, and we look forward to seeing you in Ottawa! Sincerely, Matthew Gallagher and Nicole Ratti (Tournament Directors) Important Information ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● You MUST debate with the partner you debated with at regionals; you cannot change your team between regionals and provincials. Hybrid teams are not allowed. Students are responsible for their own travel to and from the event. All tournament delegates MUST stay at the tournament hotel. DO NOT call to book your own room. OSDU has already booked enough rooms for all the delegates. The tournament registration fee covers all hotel costs. We will assign two students of the same sex from different regions to each double-occupancy suite. Adult delegates’ rooms will be located near students’ rooms. If there is a specific reason why two debate partners must room together (legislated by your school, etc.) please include this clearly in your application form. This must be due to a legitimate reason, not simply wanting to room with your partner. Regional coordinators are responsible for their delegations at the event, but other adult delegates are welcome to come. Adult delegates who are not regional coordinators or members of the Board of Directors must also complete a registration form and pay $340. All meals (Friday banquet, hot breakfast on Saturday, hot lunch on Saturday, snacks on Saturday, dinner Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday) will be provided. All delegates MUST participate in all scheduled events over the weekend. The debates will be held on Saturday at Lycée Claudel, which is located at 635 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON K1G 0E5. ● ● All student delegates will be driven by bus from the hotel to the school and back. All transportation within the event will be covered, however transportation to and from the event is your own responsibility. All tournament activities should be completed by 1:30pm on Sunday March 1st (NB lunch is not provided).
