General The Instructional Technologist is responsible for the administrative and
Description: technical aspects of delivery of Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)’s fully
online, blended, and web-supported courses. This position works
collaboratively with the Instructional Resource Center (IRC) team to support
and maintain the operations database, the delivery of fully online courses, and
monitor performance of the online courses process. The primary duties and
responsibilities of the job:
Oversee the delivery of fully online courses: • Responsible for ongoing
maintenance of online courses as well as overseeing technical support for
same • Evaluates and recommends new e-learning / LMS products and
technologies • Maintains, documents, and supports the AAP Bb environment •
Oversees the technical and functional processes to develop and maintain
course shells in a timely and routine way • Manages and produces mass
faculty and student emails concerning technical changes and use of
technologies within the AAP database, an alternate email client, or web
communications as needed • Maintains documentation and standard operating
procedures for course maintenance processes to provide smooth operations •
Pursues new technologies and identify opportunities for use and
implementation on a regular basis • Participates in integration planning and
testing of Bb system upgrades and building block installations, test, and
implements Bb updates to ensure functional alignment, performance, and
stability • Makes recommendations for process improvements and ensures all
documentation, guidelines, and training are up to date and available in the
team’s repository Maintain and report from the custom built database solution
for the IRC operational database: • Analyzes and runs accurate reports from
data as needed to satisfy data analysis needs on a regular basis • Responsible
for running and monitoring reporting systems within database to satisfy IRC
needs Provide technical support for students and faculty: • Be proactive in
identifying and resolving potential and actual problems in a timely way •
Primary liaison with Embanet, maintaining knowledge base, maintaining
weekly contact to both constituent satisfaction • Provide tier 2 technical
assistance through ticket system (JIRA) to resolution within 24 hours as
needed • Work as technological troubleshooter for technical help requests,
responding within 24 hours as needed • Assists with faculty resource and
documentation on website as needed for technology-related changes,
integrations, and applications. • Assess issues reported by JHU-AAP clients
and help desk staff • Coordinates and implements solutions to resolve
technical issues related to Bb • Document and communicate changes to the
user community to ensure guidelines, standards, and best practices are
implemented consistently Responsible for ADA and Section 508 Compliance:
• Responsible for technical aspects of ADA and Section 508 compliance, in
coordination with the disabilities coordinator • Tracks accommodation
requests involving technology-based accommodation, makes strategic
recommendations, and implements necessary changes if requested Monitor
student workers assigned to Instructional Technologist • Manage and
supervise multiple student workers and assigned tasks for smooth operation of
the course processes Support Bb AAP Online Student Orientation • Maintain
AAP LMS student orientation, monitor and assist with questions, problems
and requests.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in technology, multimedia or related degree is required. A
minimum of two years of in-depth experience in distance learning,
networking, online learning management systems, and emerging technologies
is required.
Masters degree Instructional Technology or other related discipline is
preferred. Teaching experience at the collegiate level desired.
Must be detail oriented, have a solid technical aptitude, a strong service
orientation, and a team focus. • Must have experience with Blackboard or
similar course management system and be able to learn to facilitate delivery of
online courses according to standard Bb best practices. • Should have midlevel development skills and be able to update custom built database solutions
for the IRC operational database • Knowledge of and ability to use HTML
editors, test authoring software, online conferencing applications, PDF
authoring, Flash, Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and video
compression programs. • Working knowledge of XML, HTML, CSS and
JavaScript strongly preferred • Ability to apply principles of design to provide
online education to persons with disabilities and knowledge of Universal
Design principles, SCORM and AICC • Must have understanding and
experience with webcam technology, podcasting, servers, databases,
streaming audio and video, YouTube video technology, iTunesU, embedding
video, audio, and multimedia • Must have experience working with e-learning
technology such as Camtasia or similar lecture capture applications.
Requires strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills and a customer service
orientation to work well with faculty, staff, and vendors • Requires excellent
time management skills, organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and
the ability to deal with multiple constituencies concurrently in a dynamic and
fast-paced environment • Candidate must be a proactive problem-solver, have
the ability to take the initiative with projects as they are known, and has the
ability to work independently • Must have the ability to acquire, synthesize
and share expert professional knowledge of current and emerging instructional
technologies • Must have high work standards, enjoy challenges, and work
well within a team framework • Must have demonstrated ability to develop
and prepare documentation such as standards, procedures, and user support
materials • Ability to manage and lead projects related to course development,
transfer, and archival processes.
