Updates
Construction
The demo phase is almost finished, and rebuilding is beginning. The construction company says it will
finish all work on schedule, as long as they are able to work this summer without students in the building.
Should unanticipated problems arise to delay their finishing date schedule, the company has until
September to ask for an extension. The majority of the work will be done by October, but there will still
be items needing to be done. Everything must be inspected before the scaffolding comes down.

The website is almost ready. School-related information will be uploaded. The parent who has
volunteered to design the website has been going to school as well as working, so has not had the time to
devote to the website.
Principal’s Report

s Conference that Ms. McDonald attended. She
said that she was looking for successful practices within schools and wants schools to talk to
schools and to share their knowledge and experience. She said to use “common sense” in
dealing with school issues. She wants a school to partner with one other school to share best
practices.
 $13M has been added to the DOE budget for PreK expansion, but space is an issue.
 Dual language program – The school will meet with personnel from the Chancellor’s office
regarding the feasibility of a dual language program.
 Education expansion – staffing - Formerly, the District was “frozen” and schools could only
hire staff from the ATR pool or in certain licenses. A window with more flexible hiring is now
open, and the school may consider resumes submitted by candidates seeking teaching positions
in general education.
 Additional funds may be allocated by the Chancellor for teachers’ professional development.
We could use these funds to pay for teachers attending Teachers College during the summer.
Budget
 We expect the budget to be released tomorrow, June 3rd.
 Title I funding is based on information obtained from lunch forms. Some parents were reluctant
to return the form. Some people do not understand the benefits to the school and to their
children. The school will endeavor to help parents understand the importance of returning the
lunch form.
 Registers – the projected kindergarten register is 180 general ed, students and 9 self-contained
class students. One hundred twenty-one students have already registered. Not all parents know
about the new registration procedure and the school is endeavoring to reach parents who have not
yet responded.
 Cluster positions approved are: dance cluster, Sp Ed (mandated with IEP), 2 music, 2 PE
positions, 2 science clusters.
 Teachers have a prep period every day while their class is covered by a cluster teacher.
Library - It was agreed that if we could afford it we would like to have an open access library.
Parent volunteers are needed when the library is not staffed,.

have already met to discuss ways to help our male students. Teachers will monitor how each child
is progressing socially, emotionally, academically. A parent member suggested that students
receive guidance in developing social skills.
 The school holds parent workshops to promote behavior and social development.
 The lsrge majority of parents work with the staff but there are some who do not follow up when
outside counseling is recommended for their child.
 Parent volunteers are needed in the lunchroom. A parent suggested that the school
aide000000000000s assigned to the lunchroom be introduced to the parents at the parent
orientation meeting.
 School hours are 8:10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Microsoft – the company was sued and had to donate money that can only be used to purchase specified
software and hardware. A software company is coming to demonstrate products that will update our
equipment.
Summer School will be held at P.S.217. There will be no summer school at P.S.139 to allow construction
to continue over the summer.
Fund raising.- A parent has volunteered to sell ices as a fund raiser. The school will try it out for June to
find out if it would be successful enterprise. In addition, a goal for fund raising for next year is to buy
buy $100,000 worth of books for classroom libraries.
New York Cares Day – October 18, 2014
This is an organization whose purpose is to mobilize community volunteers. The volunteers will clean
and organize classrooms. They will prepare kits for grades 3,4, and 5 students to take home, as well as
PreK student kits and kits for new parents.
A follow-up meeting on the budget is scheduled for June 19th at 5:45 p.m. in the school library, if needed.
If all items are able to be funded, this meeting will be canceled. Ms. Varon reminded parents to make
