Boutique Call for Entry
The Art Center and its member affiliate group, Art Noir, are proud to announce the 7th installment of the
Des Moines Art Center’s Big Hair Ball.
This unforgettable evening of glamour and entertainment celebrates hair of all shapes, colors, and styles
as a form of contemporary self-expression. More than 750 people attended the event in 2013. The event
will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the Des Moines Art Center, 4700 Grand Avenue, Des
Moines, Iowa.
In preparation, Iowa based retailers, makeup artists, and entertainers are invited to submit a proposal to
showcase a boutique in the Art Center lobby. Participating boutiques provide services and/or experiences
for guests. Previous years’ participants have offered services including big hair makeovers, glamorous
and funky makeup, outrageous eyelashes, fortune telling, photo booths and more. This year we are
looking for a variety of services and opportunities that extend beyond the realm of the salon experience.
This is an opportunity for local retailers, salons, and boutiques to showcase their services and talents.
They should consider providing the guests with an exciting and unexpected experience.
Please keep in mind when planning your boutique to consider the timeliness with which you can provide
the guests with your service or experience. As a boutique participant you will be volunteering your time
and services for the evening. The event will begin at 8 pm and end at 12 am. Boutiques should plan for
time needed to setup prior to the show beginning, and for time needed after the end of the show to
teardown when considering their participation.
When thinking of your proposal, please consider this year’s theme:

Entry Requirements
1) Completed entry form (including bio)
2) Complete project statement and/or letter of intent
3) Visual proposal if applicable (sketches, photos, models, idea boards, etc.)
4) Signed release form
The project statement and/or letter of intent must be between 150-200 words in a Word or PDF file. The
visual proposal should represent your idea or theme and can include samples or sketches. The
application, project statement and visual proposal will not be returned to sender and will be property of
the Des Moines Art Center.
Entry Deadlines
Entries must be submitted digitally to the Des Moines Art Center by May 8, 2015. Entries will not be
accepted after the due date.
Boutiques selected to participate will be notified by May 22, 2015. All boutiques will be notified by end of
May 2015.

Boutiques will be chosen based on:
● Creative use of theme
● Demonstration of effective use of resources to execute an idea
● Ability to show how proposed idea will coordinate with the overall event and offer an
exciting and unique experience for guests
Two tickets will be given in-kind to each participating boutique. All other tickets needed for staff, etc.
must be purchased.
Please remember…the purpose of the Des Moines Art Center’s Big Hair Ball is to support the
organization’s ability to provide free art and art education to the community. While we encourage
boutiques to promote their businesses and services by participating in this signature evening, the primary
focus of participation should be to build awareness of the Des Moines Art Center. In turn, we are thrilled
that you will be receiving widespread recognition for your participation. We can’t thank you enough!
