August

14 – 9 th Grade Parent Laptop Meetings

20 – Back to School Open House

Chamberlain High School, Middle School, and Elementary – Chamberlain School District welcomes students and parents to meet their teachers and visit classrooms. This is a time for communicating and building relationships for a successful and meaningful school year 5:00p.m. – 7:00p.m.

22 – 1 st Day of School

22 – 7 th grade LA teacher sent a letter to her students’ parents introducing her. She included contact information and background information.

September

10 – Elementary PTO Meeting 6:00p.m.

3 – 7 th grade LA teacher sent a letter to her students’ parents informing them of the book they would be using in class and curriculum information.

12 –Community Vision Mtg. CES Library 5:00p.m.

14 – Mailing sent to all K-12 parents and guardians including Dakota Step Results (grades 3-8 and 11) an explanation of the Dakota Step results and the website for the NCLB report card. Also included in the mailing was the notification:

17 – High School AP Parent meeting- AP expectations and ACT criteria were presented. 7:00p.m.

21 – Mid-term 1 st quarter – reports sent to all parents K-12 on 9/25/12

25 – The State, NAEP, School District, High School, Middle School, and Elementary School 2012 accountability and assessment templates were sent to all parents in the district with mid-term grades. Parents were notified using school reach that the reports would be coming.

October

1 – Elementary PTO meeting 6:00p.m.

2 – Kindergarten Muffins for Mom! 8:30a.m.-9:00a.m.

(Moms or substitute moms visit Kindergarten classrooms)

16 – Community Vision CHS Library 5:00p.m.

23 – End of 1 st quarter – Report Cards K-12 sent home

25 – Parent/Teacher Conferences were held at the Elementary School, Middle School, and High School from 2:30p.m.-

8:30p.m.

30 –Parent meeting at Fort Thompson from 11:30a.m.-2:00p.m. at the Crow Creek Headstart Building (RAI) –

Demonstrating and signing up parents for a Parent Portal Account and completing an AdvancED parent survey.

November

2 – 4 th grade Happy Birthday South Dakota Program 2p.m. National Guard Armory – Notable South Dakotans (children dressed as pioneers from 1889, the year of the birth of our state, songs, poetry, square dancing, lunch box social will take place – parents and community members invited to the celebration)

5 – Elementary PTO meeting 6:00p.m.

12 – School Board meeting at Fort Thompson 7:00p.m. – An opportunity for parents of Ft. Thompson students to attend the school board meeting and address the school board with their input/concerns.

19 – Thanksgiving readers’ theatre. Parents are invited to watch student presentations. (3 rd grade)

20 – 1 st and 2nd grade Readers Theatre for parents

21 – Mid-term 2 nd quarter – reports sent to all parents K-12

19 – Cradles to Crayons – 2 nd Annual Kids and Baby Expo – Where families learn, shop and play!

23 – 3 rd graders presented “Thanksgiving Reader’s Theaters” to parents.

December

6 - 5 th Grade parents invited to view the ecological succession projects students created 7:30a.m.-8:30a.m.

10 – Elementary PTO meeting 6:00p.m.

14 – 2 nd Grade Readers Theatre Performance (Mrs. Pearson’s and Mrs. Liens classrooms presented Christmas/Winter plays and poems to parents)

20– 2:00p.m. 3 rd grade presented Holidays Around The World to parents and community members – students researched countries, their holiday traditions and presented them (HUGE success – Over 100 parents/community members in attendance)

21 – End of the 2 nd Quarter – Report Cards K-12 sent home

1 – Read Across America. Parents are invited to attend a “read-in” in our classrooms. (3 rd grade)

8 – End of 3 rd Quarter – Report Cards K-12 sent home

8 – Fast ForWord individual student progress reports are sent to their parents (grades 3-4)

13 – Kindergarten to 1 st grade Transition meeting held by the first grade team: Kindergarten students & parents invited to the 1 st grade rooms for a PowerPoint presentation to see what it was like to be in First grade and what is expected of their child.

17 - Adult Volleyball – Armory 6:00p.m.

21 – 4 th Grade Notable South Dakotan Presentation at the SD Hall of Fame (students researched a notable South Dakotan, wrote a report and a speech – parents and community members were invited to see the notable South Dakotans at the SD Hall of fame – when the statues(students) button was pushed that student would give his/her speech. Huge Success!)

?? – 2 nd Grade Math Activities + fun – parents are invited to watch and participate in different math activities and games. Trail mix prepared from a previous math lesson will be shared with our guests.

April

17 – Annual Title I Parent/Community Meeting in conjunction with Mid-Dakota Reading Council – 6:15p.m. – 8:00p.m.

20 – Kindergarten Round- Up 9:00a.m.-6:00p.m. No Kindergarten classes on this day.

12 – Grandparents day – grandparents are invited to visit school and eat with their grandchildren

4 – 4 th grade cribbage tournament (parents are the kids’ partners in the tournament)

10 – 8 th grade celebration CMS Multi-Purpose Room 2:00p.m.

11 – 3 rd graders will present a “Wax Museum” presentation in the Elementary Gym (students will research a famous person, and present a speech) when the statues “button” is pushed, they will give their speech – parents and community members are invited to the presentation.

Other Activities

Folders including the CSD 2012 Report Card, CSD 2012 Assessment Report, and Assessment & Accountability

Reports for the District, Elementary School, Middle School and high school are placed at the Cozard Memorial

Library, Sanford Clinic, Avera Physician’s Plaza, CSD Administration Office, and the Title I Directors Office.

The Den – A monthly Elementary Newsletter for Parents (to inform parents of local and statewide events, conferences and opportunities that are available each month)

School & Home Connections K-6 – A monthly Elementary Newsletter to get parents involved in their child’s education. (Has many quick learning activities to do at home, from a breakfast read-a-thon to outdoor geometry, to building skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies)

Campus Parent Portal available to all Chamberlain School District Parents (parents have access to their child’s grades, attendance and missing assignments at any time)

School Reach available to all Chamberlain School District Parents (all district-wide school announcements are on school reach)

Middle School Teachers send home progress reports every approximately every 2 weeks. Extra credit is given to students returning a signed progress report from their parent. The Middle School Academic Enrichment

Teacher sends home Achievement cards awarding the students for their efforts of progress.

5 th & 6 th Grade Teachers have a weekly wiki to inform parents what their child will be doing the next week in their classes. The wiki is available to parents having access to the internet. The 6 th grade teachers email the wiki information to all 6 th grade parents who have provided an email address. The wiki information is printed off to be sent home with students who do not have internet access at home. Grade sheets are sent home every other week to keep parents involved with their child’s education.

6 th grade Teachers email and Google Voice parents about upcoming math, language arts, and reading tests, how their child does on tests and assignments, about online study sessions, and positive information when

4 their child is doing well. They also email parents notifying them of AR celebrations, Dakota STEP testing, flu shot clinics and other important happenings in the 6 th grade classrooms.

2 nd grade Teachers, beginning in January, send home parent/student centers in a bag.

Technology, 5 th & 6 th Grades,- A letter is sent to all parents of 5 th & 6 th graders with tips for staying safe online and information on the six CyberSafe educational board games that teach the dangers of the internet for parents to check out and play with their children. The parents may check them out from the Computer Lab. It’s a wonderful tool and students need to know how to behave appropriately when online.

7 th -8 th Math Students’ Parents sign a course outline during the first week of school. The outline included: contact information, a list of materials used in the course, a projected testing schedule, expectations for student behavior, grading procedures, an invitation to visit the classroom and review graded work, and a basic outline of daily classroom activities.

7 th – 8 th Social Studies Students’ Parents help their children determine their nationalities. The SS classes have a unit on citizenship that requires a family tree. They look to see what nations their students represent since the United States is a “Nation of Immigrants.”

K-6 Parent Activities for the home

– Purchased and implemented during the 2011-12 School Year.

Kindergarten – Transition to school backpack to utilize at home with their parents

At home – I can read songs for Reading a DVD

1 st Grade - Pencil boxes, school supplies and a math game for each student to have at home to use with their parents during parent/child time

2 nd Grade - Math & Reading games for parents to use with their children at home

3 rd Grade - Each student received a 1 yr. gift subscription to National Geographic Kids Magazine mailed to their home. The magazine will be used in the home with the child & parent.

4 th Grade - A backpack filled with a Brain Quest game, playing cards, a booklet of math games using playing cards, and multiplication flash cards was purchased for each student to use at home with their parents

Math and Reading games to utilize in the home

3 books were purchased for parents. The books are full of parenting and life lessons. The 6 th grade team attended workshops related to the 3 books and felt the books would be very beneficial to the parents of their students.

The book were: Top 20 parents, Essential 55, and Parenting with Love and Logic

Technology- Six CyberSafe educational board games that teach the dangers of the internet were purchased for parents to check out and play with their children. The parents may check them out from the Computer Lab. It’s a wonderful tool and students need to know how to behave appropriately when online.
