Globalization Argumentative Essay
Globalization, or the idea of “worldwide integration and development” (dictionary.com)
is a most intriguing concept on many fronts, but one that can also introduce all sorts of new and
complicated issues. This equivocal issue can be extremely beneficial in the world, as a more
connected planet offers all sorts of new advancements, but can also lead to all sorts of bad
byproducts that result from it. That being said, the pros of globalization leave it having too much
potential to not look into, and embrace.
On the one hand, the advantages that a globalized world can offer are astounding. The
most obvious bonus, and in large part one of the most important, is that a more connected world
offers a more free market, and in turn, greater economic flexibility, benefitting both the
consumer and the businessman. In addition, the added capital can be reinvested into third world
countries, bolstering the lives of those that would not necessarily be directly helped by a better
first-world economy (economicsonline.co.uk). Another advantage of a globalized planet is the
ability to reduce, and eventually eliminate cultural barriers. By spreading the political and
educational ideas, the world will be able to, “increase the global village effect”
(http://occupytheory.org), and create a more unified people. Lastly, a more unified planet offers
the proposition of reduced war between the developed nations. Inevitably as the people grow
closer together, and begin to develop better relationships, tensions will decline, in turn reducing
the “want” for war and the boosted economy eliminates some of the “need” for war.
The idea of globalization has some very blatant pros, but there are definitely some
potential abject issues that could arise in a more connected world. For example, the most
dangerous result of a globalized world is the quicker spread of disease. Due to people living and
working in a much more global state, the potential for a dangerous disease being contracted and
spread extremely fast is conceivable. Also, the economic connectivity of the world leads to better
opportunity, but also a dependence on foreign markets. This is fine in prosperous times, but
during times of recession or depression, there could be adverse reverberations felt throughout the
whole world. Even in times of growth in the economy though, there can be drawbacks.
Companies always seek out the cheapest forms of labor, and in a globalized world, this can lead
to employers looking more overseas instead of at home, leading to higher domestic
unemployment. The last thing that could be harmed by a conjoined world is the environment.
The less industrialized world is in desperate need of some economic stability, and as such, they
are more likely to exploit the environment in order to achieve it. Even today you can see that
countries can be apathetic toward their resources, like Brazil using the Amazon’s resources for
monetary gain, and this will only increase as the world becomes boundary less (englishonline.at)
Globalization, although not a perfect thing, is, and will continue to be, a driving force in
the world. Regardless of the pros and cons, society as a whole will continue to grow closer
together, and we have to be able to realize this, and make sure that all that happens as a result is
helpful to the greatest number of people.
