RMHC ANNOUNCES OVER $3 MILLION IN GRANTS TO HELP IMPROVE MATERNAL, NEONATAL
AND CHILD HEALTH AROUND THE WORLD
Family-Centered Charity Aligns With Nine Other Organizations to Address Pressing Children's Health Issues in
Africa, Asia, Latin America and the U.S.A.
Oak Brook, Ill., (January, 28, 2014) – The global office of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC)
recently granted $3,854,107 to nine organizations focused on directly improving the health and wellbeing of
children through innovative train-the-trainer projects. The organization’s Global Grant investments extend the
geographic reach of the Charity furthering its impact by moving dollars quickly to vulnerable populations who lack
basic healthcare, resources and services.
The following organizations received RMHC Global Grants:









Burma Humanitarian Mission received $35,000 to train and equip backpack medics who annually administer
healthcare services to 5,280 children in villages of Burma.
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia received $200,000 to help decrease child mortality in Botswana, through a
train-the-trainer health care system that uses a Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization
(PEARS) approach, with plans to reach 230,000 children over two years.
Concern Worldwide received $736,140 to support a 3 year program which will implement Community Case
Management of malaria, diarrhea and respiratory infections and care groups that will help address these
leading causes of child mortality in Burundi, with plans to reach more than 46,000 children under the age of
five.
Curamericas Global received $991,553 to support the further expansion of its “Casa Materna” project,
previously funded by RMHC in 2011. This project will bring health education services to women’s homes
through training and mobilizing birth attendants in 35 rural communities in Guatemala, benefiting 26,592
children.
East Meets West received $399,500 to ensure quality dental services and oral health education for more than
200,000 children through the establishment of a train-the-trainer network of health workers in Vietnam.
RMHC also funded this organization in 2011.
Global Healing received $50,000 to improve acute care delivery and improve health outcomes for an
estimated 2,100,000 critically ill pediatric patients over three years; institutionalize standard nursing practices;
create a team of national trainers, and empower nurses within the departments of emergency medicine and
neonatal and pediatric intensive care at the National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University, received $150,000 to bring lifesaving malaria services to
109,000 vulnerable children in vulnerable populations in Chad.
Lwala Community Alliance received $752,147 to support the three-year implementation of its “Thrive thru 5”
program in Migori County, Kenya, impacting the lives of 7,000 children. Previous programs funded by RMHC
have helped reduce neonatal mortality in the region by 50%.
Oral Health America received $539,767 to improve oral health for 400,000 children in vulnerable populations
in the U.S. RMHC funded the “Smiles across America” program in 2004, 2005 and 2007.
Through these projects centered on maternal and infant health, disease management, sanitation and hygiene,
oral health, and basic pediatric care, RMHC is able to focus on partnerships that improve children’s health, in
sustainable, measurable ways. These investments will impact more than 1,000,000 children across the world.
“Child mortality rates around the globe continue to be alarming. There is a need to invest in resources and
training to create lasting change,” said David C. Herman, M.D., MSMM, president and CEO, Vidant Health and
RMHC Board of Trustees member. “For 40 years, RMHC has been part of the solution in helping to eliminate some
of the barriers that make it more difficult for families and children to get the health care they need.”
Through its Global Grants and matching grants program to local U.S. RMHC Chapters, the Charity has awarded
nearly $97 million in grants in the last eleven years. Next year’s cycle to submit grant proposals will be open in July.
