Course description
1. Course title: Country road take me home, to the ECO energy source I belong
Course participants: 22 students, in organization of BEST (Board of Students of
Technology)
2. Description:
On behalf of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Department of Agricultural Economics and
Rural Sociology will organize an academic course under the title “Country road take
me home, to the ECO energy source I belong”. The department will support the
organization and delivery of several lectures from its field and will organise experts from
the other Departments to take part in the project..
The course will cover broad issues like rural development, multifunctional agriculture,
ecology of rural areas and their ecological competitiveness in rural development,
sustainable practices on the farms, ecological values, awareness and practice decision
makers in agriculture.
After introduction into the broad meaning of sustainable development for rural areas and
agriculture, the course will continue with issues like sources of renewable energy in
Serbia and legislation in that area. Participants will also be introduced to the
importance of organic agriculture for sustainable development, greening of agriculture
within the frame of agro ecological concept and development of ecological ideas in
Serbian agriculture.
Participants will also study visits to farms and companies that are active in the region
and that use renewable energy sources.
At the end, a case study that deals with renewable energy (biomass) will be presented
and in the form of a workshop, students will face certain tasks and problems that the
case study reveals.

4. Goals:
Goals of the course Country road take me home, to the ECO energy source I
belong are:
 To introduce the importance of the issue of renewable energy and sustainable
technologies in general,
 To emphasise the importance of sustainable solutions in rural development and
agriculture,
 To reveal different renewable energy sources and different sustainable
technologies, especially in food production,
 To present the most common problems in the use of renewable energy, most
common bad practices that endanger the sustainability of agriculture and rural
areas and the gap between legislation and usual practice in rural areas.
5. Type of examination:
At the end of the course, students will work together on a case study and they will try to
estimate costs of biomass production and to calculate them. Students will present their
results in the form of a work.
6. Necessary background:
Participants need no special background knowledge. All lectures will be held in
understandable and “popular” manner in order to give better understanding of the
problematic involved.
7. Question to answer:
Name at least three reasons why modern agriculture is not sustainable over the long
term (max 200 characters).
