1. Enrich their vocabulary.

0111 Conversation 1 Course Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. Demonstrate basic interpersonal communication skills necessary for informal
communication.
2. Demonstrate understanding basic pragmatics (the branch of linguistics dealing with
language in use and the contexts in which it is used).Take basic dictation on
academic topics with 70% accuracy.
3. Participate actively in topical group discussions.
4. Deliver a well-developed 5 minute formal speech with relatively clear pronunciation
and grammatical accuracy.
0140 Introduction to Reading in English Course Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. Read their next 100 words on the Fry Readability Word Lists at 95% accuracy within
one minute.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of basic word attack skills, such as vowels, digraphs, and
plurals.
3. Utilize the dictionary to locate parts of speech, multiple meanings, and idioms.
4. Respond to basic comprehension questions of short passages.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

0160 Introduction to Grammar Course Outcomes:
The goal of this course is to enhance the students’ English grammar skills. At the end of
the course, students should be able to correctly use the following grammatical
components in written and verbal (including pronunciation) communication:

Nouns, including count and non-count nouns.

The primary goal of this course is to enhance the students’ English grammar skills. At
the end of the course, students should be able to correctly use the following grammatical
components in written and verbal communication (including pronunciation):

 Simple, progressive, perfect, perfect progressive
2. Subject-verb agreement

Secondary goals of this course are to 1) teach students to be better world citizens through
consistent reflection on world issues, and 2) prepare students for the technological
demands of the current professional market.

3. Read and understand an additional 100 Fry words.
4. Recognize collocations (words frequently used together).
5. Recognize and understand six common patterns of organization commonly seen in
English paragraphs.
6. Define and use a minimum of 120 most frequently encountered academic words
found in text.
7. Demonstrate progress in creating topic sentences and thesis statements for a reading
passage.
8. Make inferences about their reading at increasing levels of difficulty.
