Job Title: Assistant Principal, Elementary and Middle School
Job Summary:
The Assistant Principal’s primary job responsibility is the supervision, discipline, and monitoring of students. The
Assistant Principal, under the direction of the Building Principal, implements and enforces school board policies,
administrative rules and regulations. In the absence of the Building Principal, the Assistant Principal shall assume the
duties and responsibilities of the Building Principal. The Assistant Principal will work cooperatively with the District
Administrator and administrative team, support district-wide goals and initiatives, and be held directly accountable to the
District Administrator.
Reports to: Building Principal and District Administrator
Supervisory Responsibilities: Students and staff as assigned by the Building Principal
Payment Rate: According to Administrative Salary Schedule
Essential Functions:
Assist with a variety of school administrative functions (e.g. substitute personnel, ground maintenance school based
testing requirements, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing school, district, and state policy and maintaining safety and
efficiency of school operations.
Establish a professional rapport with students and with staff that has their respect. Display the highest ethical and
professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents and school personnel. Serve as a role model for
students, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and
demonstrating pride in the education profession. Encourage all teachers to do the same.
Ensure that personnel and student record keeping procedures comply with State and federal law, administrative codes,
board policies and regulations. Implement procedures for safe storing and integrity of all public and confidential school
records.
Assist in protecting the instructional time from unnecessary interruptions and intrusions for the purpose of enhancing
excellence, equality and equity for staff and students.
Supervise in a fair and consistent manner effective discipline and attendance systems with high standards, consistent with
the philosophy, values and mission of the school and district, in accordance with due process and other laws and
regulations, ensuring a safe, orderly environment that encourages students to take responsibility for behavior and creates
high morale among staff and students.
Work with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior and
enhances the school climate. Enforce guidelines to maintain proper discipline and conduct. Communicate relevant policies and
procedures with regard to student discipline, conduct, and attendance to students, staff, and parents.
Maintain and update safe school and crisis plans by conducting monthly emergency drills. Coordinate student and staff
safety with the district. Monitor halls, school grounds, and pupil movement to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
Assist Building Principal with fire, storm and tornado drills on a regular basis and is able to implement emergency
evacuations and lock-downs effectively.
Ensure the safe arrival and departure of students at bus transportation or for the safety supervision of arrival and departure
of students at non-bus transportation. These are known as before/after school duties.

Job Description
Prepare required reports and paperwork such as discipline reports, suspension reports, expulsion paperwork,
discrimination complaints, injury reports, parent communications, and other paperwork as assigned.
Work with the Building Principal in the preparation of appropriate handbooks.
Work as a team member to meet the system-wide needs of the district.
Test materials and data will have been appropriately coordinated, interpreted, and disseminated.
Assist in supervision of special events. Attend extra-curricular activities (e.g. sports activities, student centered activities,
concerts, music programs, district programs, etc.) for the purposes of supporting students and staff in all school functions and
ensuring continued report with students and staff.
Assist in the care and management of the building and grounds, furniture, equipment, apparatus, books, and supplies.
Maintain and improve the quality of the instructional program and school climate through being responsible for teacher
implementation of the curriculum, through supervision of instruction and through assisting in the development of the
instructional program for the district.

Assist in curriculum development to meet the needs of all students. Ensure that the instructional programs engage the
learner in tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, questioning the known, problem solving and creativity, that
they address the range of skills and developmental needs found in the classroom, that they encourage the student to define
individual goals and accept responsibility for learning, and that they provide a variety of methods for the student to
demonstrate performance and achievement.
Facilitate staff development and in-service programs for all certified personnel for the purpose of developmental opportunities
and educational planning and knowledge.
Facilitate meetings (e.g. curriculum, faculty, safety, leadership, special district committees, PLC, etc.) using shared decisionmaking process established by each group.
Responsible for keeping abreast of educational research, attending professional development activities and planning with
peers at district meetings. Read current professional literature.
Develop positive school/community relationships through a variety of avenues of open communication with the staff,
community and within the district. Communicate in meetings, monthly newsletters, weekly bulletins, staff memos, and
parent and student correspondence.
Communicate regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support
the student in the school.
Compose and present a wide variety of materials (e.g. accountability reports, student activities, handbooks, correspondence,
etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, evaluating test scores, providing written references, and/or conveying
information.
Coordinate additional school resources in the building, including before and after school program, resource, speech/language,
occupational therapy, adaptive physical education program, and after school community programs (PTO, Parent University).

Job Description
Oversee general maintenance of school building and outside grounds, including playground equipment. Coordinate
concerns with district nutritional services, transportation department and custodial services.
Ensure that personnel and student record keeping procedures comply with State and federal law and district policy.
Implement procedures for safe storing and integrity of all public and confidential school records.
Work with counselor and teachers to identify potential dropouts for the purpose of providing information and assistance
for placement in programs and evaluate information for the purpose of making realistic academic decision.
Perform home visits for the purpose of assessing needs for students who display as-risk behavior in areas of dropping out,
neglect, abuse, continuous failure, or chronic problems as assessed by the counselor or other school professional.
Intervene in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such
behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
Timely and effective communications regarding incidents and/or situations which might impact the district, its divisions
or its schools will have been consistently provided to appropriate district office/school personnel.
Researches alternate funding sources for the purpose of maintaining the efficient operation of the school.
Perform other related duties efficiently, promptly, and dependably, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient
and effective functioning of the work unit.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Condition:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional district-wide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular
hours.
Requires prolonged standing, or moving around the classroom, occasional stooping, bending and reaching, sometime
noisy and crowded environments. Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Exposure to a variety of
childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.
Qualifications:
1. At least four years of successful teaching experience on the appropriate level
2. Master’s Degree in administration and supervision from an accredited college or university
3. A valid MS principal’s certification appropriate to area of work
4. Demonstrate excellent leadership and organizational skills and the ability to motivate people.
