1. Center for Partnerships for Educational Reform
Purpose: To provide service and support to schools seeking to examine, renew and restructure
their continuing efforts to improve educational experiences and outcomes for all students.

2. Center for Research and Innovation in Elementary Education
Purpose: To promote scholarly projects and research services relating to the interests and
concerns of those individuals involved in elementary education, including professional
development, assessment of curriculum and instruction, consultation, research, grants, contracts,
publication, and program development; and to augment facilities, equipment and services
required to enrich the operation and program of the Department, College and University.

3. Center for Professional Development and Educational Outreach
Purpose: To promote scholarly projects and research services relating to the interests and
concerns of those individuals involved in research, grants, contracts, publications, and program
development; to augment facilities, equipment and services required to enrich the operation and
programs of the Department, College, and University; to promote professional secondary
curriculum development; professional development for faculty and educators in the field, and
university students. Conferences, workshops, seminars, courses and symposia, may be approved
by the center.

4. Valley Trauma Center
Purpose: To dedicate the elimination of sexual and interpersonal violence through healing,
empowerment, and increased public awareness of prevention strategies by providing quality
crisis intervention and counseling services, training, and prevention education to promote social
change.

5. Center in Educational Psychology and Counseling
Purpose: To provide educational workshops to students, pre-licensed and licensed mental health
professionals and educators. Entities operating under the auspices of the center include the
Mitchell Family Counseling Clinic, which provides individual and family counseling and parent
education, and the Valley Trauma Center, a sexual assault response facility.

6. Center for Educational Intervention and Therapy (CEIT)
Purpose: This Center provides educational intervention and therapy services to individuals with
special needs and their families. Programs could include clinical services that provide outreach
to the community and related research projects, conferences, workshops, special courses,
seminars, etc. The Center may augment facilities, equipment and services that enrich the
operation of the Department of Special Education and enhance credential, masters and certificate
programs.

7. Center for Teaching and Learning
Purpose: Research branch of the College and its mission is to keep CSUN at that forefront of
cutting edge innovations in the field of education. By developing highly effective teachers
through cohesive professional development, the main goal is to create frameworks and programs

8. Teaching, Learning and Counseling Consortium (TLC)
Purpose: With the transdisciplinary model as its guide, the TLC provides innovative clinical
training for educators and mental health professionals while providing supportive communitybased services to families and individuals using an integrated and transformative approach to
student/family/client learning. Serves as an umbrella Clinic for service areas listed below.

1) Berke Assessment Library
The Berke Assessment Library was established to serve the needs of the Special
Education Department and their role in preparing teachers to assess children’s
support needs. The Berke Assessment Library currently provides support to
students and faculty by serving as a resource library of assessment tests and
protocols to use for academic, cognitive, socio-emotional, and career assessments.

2) Family Focus Resource Empowerment Center (FFREC)
The FFREC is an informational, referral, supportive and educational organization
serving families of: infants with or who are at-risk for developmental delays,
children and adults with disabilities, and the professionals who work with them in
the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys.

3) LA Times Literacy Center (LATLC)
The Los Angeles Times Literacy Center (LATLC) provides literacy assessment
services as well as customized literacy instruction and tutoring for elementary and
secondary school students who are experiencing difficulties and/or delays in
developing literacy skills. As a clinical training site, the Los Angeles Times
Literacy Center prepares CSUN education students to take a leadership role in
school-based and community literacy programs.

4) Mitchell Family Counseling Clinic (MFCC)
The MFCC program provides a clinical training and research site for graduate
level students in the college’s counseling programs, while also providing muchneeded counseling services to members of our local community.

5) Special Education Literacy Lab (SELL)
The SELL provides one-on-one literacy tutoring to children from local schools,
grades K-12, who struggle with reading. Services include an assessment of
reading needs and intensive instruction tailored to the individual needs of each
student. With faculty support, guidance, and supervision, this hands-on tutoring
experience is an opportunity to design and apply assessment and teaching

strategies taught in university classes and to implement evidence based
instruction.

1. Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics
Purpose: Performs research and brings evaluation technologies for food quality assessment to the
community while educating future professionals. Students also study the effects of biological and
chemical treatments on foods. Outreach includes visits to low-income communities to share
money-saving shopping tips and show families how to make nutritious and inexpensive meals.
Also provides educational programs in nutrition including a lecture series on nutrition and a
nutrition and food safety hotline. A computer diet analysis service is also available to the public.

2. Center of Achievement for Adaptive Physical Activity and Therapeutic Exercise
Purpose: To provide professional services and educational programs: to maximize the physical
potential of all handicapped persons served by the center enabling them to gain the greatest level
of independence and productivity; to provide the highest quality of educational and practical
training experience for students in pursuit of degrees in Adapted Physical Education, and may
also be of interest to students in Health Science, Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education and
Biomechanical Engineering. To stimulate graduate research and creative projects with the goal to
advance our understanding through research and development for the purpose of improving the
level of independence and quality of life for physically disabled individuals; Promote innovative
programs through interdisciplinary efforts, working in collaboration with both public and private
sectors to determine better ways to reduce barriers that interfere with the mainstreaming process.

3. The Aquatic Center at Castaic Lake
Purpose: To provide credit, non-credit, and contract programs, including sailing, kayaking, water
safety, boating safety, and special programs for schools and community organizations.

4. Center for the Study of Leisure and Play Behavior
Purpose: Collaborates with local schools, parks and recreation centers to organize educational
events that bring together grade school children, their families, and CSUN faculty and student
specialists for fun, recreation and play. Groups explore the nature of play and its effects on
lifestyle, health and interpersonal dynamics using learning centered techniques for caring,
communication, problem solving and negotiation. Also provides community service in risk
environments, outreach, developing contracts and grants, and supporting the professional
development of local practitioners.

5. Center for Health Promotion, Research, and Ethics
Purpose: The Center will provide the organizational structure to develop programs, workshops,
and seminars in health ethics and policy. It will collaborate with public and private leaders as
appropriate, offer relevant community service, conduct research, and play a leading role in
establishing a health care ethics and policy forum under the University umbrella. In addition, the
Center will bring together faculty with interest or expertise in the health science, to facilitate
research and related community-service projects. It is anticipated that the Center will 1) open
additional avenues of cooperation and scholarly activities among faculty across the University
with similar interests, 2) provide opportunities for professional growth of the faculty and their
students, and 3) provide benefits to the larger community served by the University.

6. Language, Speech and Hearing Center
Purpose: To provide comprehensive evaluations of speech/language or hearing related problems
along with a wide array of treatment programs which are performed in the individual therapy or
group setting. Clients are enrolled according to the university calendar for the fall, spring or
summer sessions. The Center is also involved in the early identification of communication
disorders through its pre-school and elementary school speech or hearing screening programs.

7. Physical Therapy Center for Advanced Clinical Practice
Purpose: To provide Physical Therapy related community services for clients and patients with
physical therapy needs. An enhanced educational environment will be provided for graduate
students in CSUN’s development of workshops and continuing education courses for community
professionals. The Center will also support clinical research to advance evidence based clinical
decision making in the profession of physical therapy facilitating life long learning in graduates
and the professional community.

8. The Child and Family Studies Center
Purpose: Accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood for maintaining the highest
standards in early childhood education and by the American Association of Family and
Consumer Sciences as a high quality instructional site for CSUN students and children of the
community. Outreach efforts include programs assisting youth and their families, parenting
newsletters, parenting classes, and presentations to community groups.

1. Center for Southern California Studies
Purpose: To promote study, documentation and understanding of the cultural, historical, and
ecological resources and social and environmental problems confronting southern California
with special emphasis on the CSUN service area; promote interest in the studies of southern
California among faculty and students, the academic community, and the general public; provide
professional services including the consultation and policy analysis to the university community
and the region in general, local businesses and government agencies.

2. DuBois-Hamer Institute
Purpose: To develop a sense of community among African-Americans at CSU Northridge that
cultivates a supportive environment both psychologically and intellectually; to promote crosscultural understanding and enhance the ability of the university community to respect and value

focused on the African-American experience.

5. Center for the Study of Atlantic History
Purpose: To support scholarly projects and professional services/activities of the faculty of the
College of Social and Behavioral Sciences with the goal of documenting and promoting
understanding of the connections between diverse regions and peoples around the Atlantic Ocean
from the Columbian Exchange in the late fifteenth-century to the mid-nineteenth century global
race for empire. To serve as an educational resource for the students at the University, the news

media, the general public and utilize the expertise of CSUN faculty, staff, students, and qualified
experts on the subject of Atlantic and economic history.

6. Anthropological Research Institute at CSU, Northridge
Purpose: Promotes the study, documentation and understanding of the anthropological and
archaeological resources of Southern California and other regions of interest to faculty and
students of CSUN. Also promotes professional interest and growth in anthropology, archaeology
and folklore among members and students of the Department of Anthropology, the
archaeological community, and the general public. In addition provides professional services to
the university, the archaeological community, museums, business and government agencies.
