3-6 Multicultural Public Speaking Competition 2014
Dear Parents,
In term 2 we will be conducting a Public Speaking Competition. The competition is for all students in Years
3-6 and the general theme is Multiculturalism. Students write a speech on one of the following topics. The
competition is a wonderful way for children to gain confidence in preparing and delivering a speech in
front of their peers.
Year 3-4 (Stage 2)
Racism is bullying
Multiculturalism at the FIFA World Cup
Empathising with other people
How kids can make a difference
Harmony Day
Every family has a story
My overseas connections
When does a migrant become an Australian?
Multiculturalism at school
What makes a community?
Years 5-6 (Stage 3)
Asylum seekers
The meaning of Australia Day
Getting a multicultural education
Multiculturalism in the media
Religion
Connecting communities
The same but different
Un-Australian
Stereotypes
Living between cultures
What are the judges looking for?
The judges will make their decision based on the manner, matter and method the contestants employ in
presenting their speeches. They will expect speakers to be confident and engaging speakers. The prepared
speeches need to show an understanding of multiculturalism and be well developed and interesting.
Speakers are also expected to demonstrate a balance of personal opinion and information in their
speeches, as well as a balance of humour and sincerity.
Speeches will be assessed on:
Clarity of speech – volume and expressions
Preparation
Content
Interpretation of the topic
Audience appeal
Maximum use of time allowed
Where possible, children should try not to ‘read’ their speech. Using palm cards is a good idea to record
important ideas/points. Speakers are not allowed to use any props or external aids such as Powerpoint
presentations or microphones during their speeches.
Students have the opportunity to discuss their speech topics and expectations with their teachers at
school, but speeches will need to be written at home as part of their homework.
Class competitions will take place between 19th and 23rd May. The school competition will take place on
Wednesday 28th May.
Maximum duration of talks is:
Year 3 & 4:
three minutes
Year 5 & 6:
four minutes
Outstanding speakers from each class will be given the opportunity to speak at stage finals on. The two
most outstanding speakers from each Stage will be selected to participate in the Ryde District Multicultural
Public Speaking Competition in June.
