Light Learning Target
 I can demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels through one medium to another and
demonstrate that light can be reflected such as the use of mirrors or other shiny surfaces and refracted such as the
appearance of an object when observed through water. (5th Grade Readiness Standard)
transparent: materials that allow nearly all light to pass through. Clear window glass is transparent.
translucent: materials that allow some light to pass through. Frosted glass is translucent.
opaque: materials that do not allow any light to pass through. Wood and metal are opaque.
shadow: the dark image on a surface caused by something that blocks light from the sun. Your shadow is
short in the morning and long in the evening.
absorption: happens when light waves are taken in, or absorbed by an object
reflect/reflection: happens when light bounces off an object. Shiny and smooth surfaces reflect more light
than rough surfaces.
refract/refraction: is the bending of light. This happens because light moves at different speed through
different materials.
lens: a piece of clear material such as glass that bends light as it passes through it.
concave lens: can make objects appear smaller
convex lens: can make objects appear larger
prism: a solid glass or crystal object that light can pass through. It has three sides that are rectangles and two
ends shaped like triangles. A prism splits a ray of light into the colors of the rainbow.
