Programmes
Overall role:
To design and supervise the implementation of WASH activities in Turkey under the direction of the WASH
Programme Manager.
Specific responsibilities:
To reduce the health risks to people affected by emergency / disaster conditions by providing or rehabilitating
water and sanitation systems and promoting good hygiene practices:
 Consult with community representatives (including women) about access, design and management of
water systems and sanitation facilities, as well as hygiene promotion needs.
 Design and implement water storage, treatment and distribution systems - potable / other uses.
 Design and implement sanitation systems for household and/or communal toilets, household liquid and
solid wastes, hospital wastes and other community facilities, including drainage and vector control and in
close coordination with health and education services.
 Deliver training on water treatment, water quality testing; maintenance and hygiene promotion to
technical staff, water monitors, truck drivers, cleaners, community volunteers & community facilitators.
 Assess condition, set up maintenance systems, train staff and arrange repairs of tanks/water towers,
pumps, generators, pipe networks, drainage systems and water quality testing equipment.
 Prepare technical drawings, BOQ, specifications for water and sanitation infrastructure.
 Contribute in the development, negotiation and management of contracts with service providers
(including preparing tender documentation and evaluating capacity and quality of contractors).
 Supervise direct reporting staff, contractors and direct labour work teams.
 Liaise with other agencies/government bodies/control groups to ensure coordination and works
suitability. Participate in or facilitate Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) coordination meetings.
 Set up systems for cleaning and maintenance of water and sanitation infrastructure.
 Any other duty as may be assigned by his/her line manager
Required Experience, Skills and QualificationUniversity Degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or other relevant field(s) and at least 5 years of
practical, hands-on experience in water treatment and supply, sanitation, public health or
hydrology/hydrogeology with a minimum of 1 year experience in emergency response or
humanitarian relief context.
Good command of English and Turkish languages. Arabic and Kurdish an asset
Able to work in harsh, unstable and difficult conditions, independently and in a team.
Strong cross-cultural communication and resilience skills are very important.
Experience in supervising and mentoring other staff.
Able to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different cultural
backgrounds.
