This project, a passfail course on the transcript, is an important part of the BC High Curriculum and the overall BC High Student experience. Rational: Our purpose is for the student to learn about social justice through an experience of working with people who know what it means to be pushed to the margins of society (the experience of being marginalized.) The purpose coincides with the mission of the Society of Jesus and the mission of Jesuit Secondary Schools. The mission reaches beyond a college-prep education, which is available in many other private and public secondary schools. What distinguishes a Jesuit education is the emphasis on a call to view the world from the perspective of marginalized people: a perspective which develops what Fr. Arrupe, S.J., the former general of the Society of Jesus, calls men and women for others. Requirements: Minimum of 60 Hours at an Approved Agency Reflection group meetings o During the summer students choose from pre-determined reflection group sessions. Each session meetings twice for 90 minutes. o During the school year, meetings are scheduled according to free periods. Complete a Community Service Journal Page | 3 Selecting a Project: Junior Year is a very busy year for students, and so students must approach the justice project carefully and thoughtfully. Students will complete the project by participating in a Community Action Project in the summer before, or during fall and/or spring of his Junior Year. Students and parents should carefully consider which of the available options is most suitable considering students academic schedule, extracurricular commitments, work schedule, and other outside commitments. Choosing and Contacting an Agency: The process of choosing an agency is an important one. We have tried to incorporate as much information as possible to help you make that decision. If you have specific questions about agencies, see Mrs. Adamczyk. Some agencies require extensive application processes, so be sure to contact agencies as soon as possible. Many agencies require a volunteer application, a CORI check & medical forms - which take about 2 weeks to process. Do not wait to contact an agency. It is important to make the decision about your service with your parents, but Agencies want to hear from you not your parents. The decision of where and when you fulfill Junior Community Action will likely have an impact on your entire family; therefore, your parents should be involved in the process of decision making with you. However, the responsibility of setting up the service is the student’s. Ms. Suslowicz in Campus Ministry and Mrs. Adamczyk are always willing to let you use their phones when available during the school day in order to contact a service agency. Please know we try our best to keep updated records, but things change at the agencies all the time. If you ever have trouble reaching the contact person we have listed, just ask the main reception desk for the volunteer coordinator or the person who handles volunteers if there is no one with that title. Many programs you may have worked with for Freshmen and Sophomore service may be great agencies that do great work but not all of them are approved agencies for Junior Community Action. However, if you know of an agency that you think meets the four criteria listed and explained below, you can do a new agency application form. We are open to having new agencies and students tend to be the way we find great new placements, but any new agency must meet the placement criteria. The New Agency Application then goes to a committee and you will hear in about a week whether the agency has been approved or not. Criteria for Junior Community Action Agencies: Agency must serve clients who are marginalized (i.e. homeless, sick, elderly, those experiencing poverty, physically or mentally disabled.) Agency must be located in an urban community* Agency must be a non-profit agency Agency must be able to provide students with direct service with clients and be able to supervise student volunteers adequately. *You will notice in this booklet there are a few agencies that are approved in non-urban environments. This is rare and only happens when the marginalization of the clients is so great it warrants an exception. The marginalization of the clients must be greater than those of similar urban placements. Page | 24 APPROVING A NEW SERVICE IMMERSION WEEK EXPERIENCE FOR JCA Because the goals of the Junior Community Action Program are very specific, the guidelines for what makes a Service Immersion Week approved are also very specific. Approved non-BC High Service Immersion Weeks must be comparable to the 60 hours of service that their fellow students experience spread over a year. In addition, a pre-trip and post-trip reflection component is required. If you know of a Service Immersion Week experience that you think meets the four criteria listed and explained below, you can do a new Service Immersion Week application form. The Application then goes to a committee, which then grants approval or denial of the program. Criteria for Junior Community Action Service Immersion Weeks: Must be a week long overnight experience Organization sponsoring trip must be a non-profit Actual service work must serve clients who are marginalized (i.e. homeless, sick, elderly, those experiencing poverty, physically or mentally disabled) Must be able to provide students with direct service with clients and be able to supervise student volunteers adequately New Agency applications are reviewed by a committee. Therefore, all new agency applications must be submitted at least two weeks before the contract due date. Page | 25
