CARDBOARD CHALLENGE ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM Further information The artist appointed to the successful four schools will lead the negotiation and ideas for designing a large scale cardboard creation with the students. This includes taking students and their teacher, through a design phase. Once a design is decided upon, the artist will lead the students in its construction, using cardboard and other materials needed to ‘hold’ it together! How will the four schools be selected? 1. The four DECD schools will be selected by a panel consisting of professional artists, Come Out Children’s Festival team members and educators. 2. Schools will be selected according to information provided on the application form. The application needs to demonstrate imagination, input from the students, and how having an artist in residence for the Cardboard Challenge will be incorporated into the teaching and learning plan for the students/classes involved. It must include how it will enhance and add value to student learning using the Australian Curriculum: The Arts and at least one other Learning area. A web-link to the DECD Learning design template is provided within the application form. See the Teaching and Learning Resource supporting this festival for further ideas of how you might present your teaching and learning plan. 3. Preference will be given to schools that have not previously been involved in the Creative Education Partnerships: Artists in Residence program. 1 4. Successful schools will be notified directly by Come Out Children’s Festival prior to the commencement of term 1, 2015. Is there a specific design brief for the Cardboard Challenge? The Cardboard Challenge may respond to the theme of Come Out Children’s Festival 2015, Building Bridges. It may be portrayed literally or metaphorically. Which year levels may enter? This project is open to all students from Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) Preschools – Year 12 within the broad metropolitan area. What is the procedure if our school is selected? Your school will be contacted by Come Out Children’s Festival prior to the commencement of Term 1, 2015. Come Out Children’s Festival, the appointed artist, and the DECD Manager Arts Education will work with your school to negotiate the planning details. This will include ensuring meeting the contractual arrangements around the number of days the artist will work with the students, workshop content, sourcing materials (ie, cardboard!) When applying, schools are asked to nominate preferred days for the workshops, dates to avoid, and so on. Each artist will have undergone the Criminal History Screening and Responding to Abuse and Neglect training. The artist will work with no more than one class at a time. It is assumed that the teacher/s and students would be the same for all workshops. Teachers must be present at all times supporting the artist during the residency. 1 The Creative Education Partnerships: Artists in Residence program is funded through the Australia Council for the Arts. It is managed in collaboration with the Department for Education and Child Development and ArtsSA. It is a national program that teams professional artists with students and teachers in schools. Pg 1 of 5 What happens to our cardboard creations? There will be an exhibition of Cardboard Challenge entries by the Come Out Children’s Festival at the Adelaide Festival Centre during the festival period (22 – 30 May 2015). Schools will be able to organise collection of their cardboard creations afterwards. If selected, what do schools need to provide for the workshops? A classroom (preferably uncarpeted) at least 12 metres (long) x 10 metres (wide) x 4 metres (high), with a suitable wet-area if possible. Cardboard will be provided but any extra cardboard/recycled boxes that your school can provide would be a tremendous help, as well as adhesive tape. A more complete list will be provided to the winning schools. Can our school still participate in the Cardboard Challenge if we miss out on an Artist in Residence? YES! Come Out Children’s Festival invites schools to engage their artistic entrepreneurs in building a cardboard creation of their own. Send us photographs or a short video of your school’s cardboard creation/s to be placed on our Over to You page and shared with the international Cardboard Challenge Community. Free workshops are also available at the festival, working with two Artists. Creations will be displayed in the Cardboard Cubby Town exhibition in Lyrics.
