Calvin C. Bryant, Founder of The American Legion Joe Murphy Post 1957 in Roosevelt, Dies at 84 ROOSEVELT, New York, Wednesday, February 22, 2012 – Calvin C. Bryant, who was honored for founding The American Legion Joe Murphy Post 1957 in Roosevelt, N.Y., departed this life early Tuesday morning. He was 84. Born in Nashville, N.C., on October 31, 1927 to the late Delmo Bryant and Ethel Powell, he received his formal education in the Nashville Public School System. Mr. Bryant was a veteran of the Korean War during which he served in the United States Army. He received a Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and a United Nations Service Medal. On July 2, 1968, Bryant married Bessie M. Howard in Wilson, N.C. After living in Brooklyn, N.Y. for several years, the couple relocated to Roosevelt, N.Y., on Long Island. Bryant was a dedicated husband and father with a great sense of humor and a love for sports. He worked for Verizon for more than 25 years, primarily as a lineman. As a Roosevelt resident, he was very active in the community. He took pride in volunteering with the Roosevelt Fire Department for many years and coaching youth football. He was a loyal member of The American Legion, enjoying the camaraderie of other veterans and programs offered locally. In 1997, he recognized a void for Roosevelt veterans and founded The American Legion Joe Murphy Post 1957, named for a beloved fellow veteran. Bryant is survived by his wife of 43 years, Bessie M. Bryant; son, Calvin D. Bryant; daughter, Adrian Morris; daughter-in-law, Nichell Taylor Bryant; and son-in-law, Omar Morris, all of Long Island; sister, Toile Harrison of Nashville, N.C.; nephew, Robert Battle, Jr. of Durham, N.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends. The wake will be held Sunday, February 26, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at John Moore Funeral Home, 150 Nassau Road, Roosevelt, N.Y. 11575. The funeral is Monday, February 27, 10 a.m., at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 189 Babylon Turnpike, Roosevelt, N.Y. 11575.
