SSE 3312, August 24, 2011 Patriotic Song of the Week “The Star Spangled Banner” Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? This Day in History On this date, August 24, in 1992, Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida. In Dade County, 90% of homes had major roof damage, and in the Everglades, 25% of all trees were blown down. In all, 32 people lost their lives. Because of widespread devestation in Florida and Louisianna, the name Andrew was retired and will never be used again for an Atlantic hurricane. http://kernesswiki.wikispaces.com/ National Council for the Social Studies www.ncss.org Ten Themes 1.
