CUTAWAY: VARIOUS OF D. MUKWEGE AND G. PITTELLA TALKING TOGETHER Story In the current debate taking place in the European Parliament on conflict minerals, Socialist & Democrat MEPs are fighting to obtain a binding legislation on the traceability of raw materials. Eastern Congo has been the scene of atrocious crimes over the past 20 years. Around 500,000 women and girls have endured systematic rape and mutilation by local armed groups who use sexual violence as a weapon of terror and destruction. These war crimes are often funded through the illegal trade in minerals - used in many of our essential electronic devices. Socialist & Democrat MEPs stand to stop this complicity. Yesterday, S&D leader Gianni Pittella met with Congolese human rights activist and 2014 Sakharov Prize laureate Dr Denis Mukwege to reiterate his strong commitment to help stop these atrocities and ban the use of conflict minerals in Europe and abroad. The video package includes natural soundbites with Dr. Denis Mukwege and S&D leader Gianni Pittella.
