Course Description : The goal of this yearlong high school art class is to develop our perception of space by exploring how sculpture interacts with the surrounding environment. We will be learning how to manipulate a variety of tactile materials, including: wire, plaster, paper, wood, clay, “found objects”, adhesives, and more! Students will also be involved in planning, revising, and reflection processes.
Throughout this course we will study the creative method and use it as a problem-solving tool to guide us through the challenges we face as developing artists.
Building Independence in Artistic Processes: This involves creating a balance between encouraging students’ high interest areas while learning new art techniques and skills. This class is a safe place for students to express their unique ideas and sense of humor!

General Class Rules
Art Studio Rules:
Be Safe- Stay aware of the space and people around you. Keep hands, feet, and objects to self.
Be Flexible- Work with a variety of students and staff
Be Respectful- Allow learning to take place, follow directions, use expected words, and value each other’s space and belongings.
Be Responsible- Come prepared for class, be on time and participate.
Competitions and Fundraisers:
Students will be expected to compete in one competition during the school year. There are three competitions that we do every year: Rodeo Austin, Scholastic, and VASE. There is an entry fee that is attached to all three, ranging from 5 to 15 dollars. Only one of the competitions require you to show up on the day of the competition(VASE).
Students will complete a sculpture for a 4x4 fundraiser that will occur later in the semester. The fundraiser raises money for both field trips and scholarships for advanced art students.
Assignment and Grading Plan
Grades will be determined on an individual basis using a rubric. All projects must show thought, creativity, and effort. Each project will have several grades at various stages of completion. The overall grade on a project will be complied from multiple aspects: quality work, good craftsmanship, class participation, and cooperation. The mere completion of a project does not guarantee a grade. A grade of a C is average and exceptional work will increase this.
Major work/projects will take up 70% of your grade.
Minor work will be 30% of your grade. Work that falls under this category would be: worksheets and classwork
All work must be turned in with your name on it in order to receive a grade.
Make up work is your responsibility to get. You will lose points for being late after 5 days from absence.
No grade will be given to missing work after a grading period has passed.
Late major work will receive a 20 point penalty up to 5 days after the due date. No work will be accepted after the 5 days from the due date. No minor work will be accepted late.
