March 2, 2011 Hello Alumni, Alumna and Friends: We held our 2nd board meeting of the year on Monday, February 28 th. Thomas Kelly of Kingston was the lucky winner of our 2011 early dues paying raffle which entitles him to two home football game tickets of the his choice. Congratulations Tom! We have a full slate of activities scheduled for 2011. Here’s what we have lined up: Thursday, March 17th – UND Night Celebration As you have heard, Fr. Edward (Monk) Malloy will be our UND Night speaker. What a way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! The enclosed flyer has all the details of the evening which is being held at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie. Our thanks go to Linda L. Quinn, ’84 and Les McCarthy for co-chairing this event and to Brian Ledley, ’84, Matt Wopperer, ’07 and Russ Wyborski, 83 for serving on the committee. The committee has done an incredible job coordinating this event in a very tight timeframe. As part of our UND Celebration we will be giving the Notre Dame Club of the Mid-Hudson Valley Award of the Year to Brian Ledley, ‘84. We must give the Grandview a headcount, so please RSVP as soon as possible. Tuesday, April 5 – Hesburgh Lecture We will be holding our annual Hesburgh Lecture at the Nelly Goletti Theatre at Marist College. Rev. Ron Nuzzi will be presenting “Who Will Save our Catholic Schools?” The enclosed flyer provides all the details. Saturday, April 30th – Hesburgh Day of Service We will be holding our annual day of service at an Astor Home site on the last Saturday in April. Please consider joining us. Christina Mondi, ’14 will be arriving from Cincinnati at the end of May to volunteer for 8 weeks as our Summer Service Learning Program Student and will be working at the Astor Home in Rhinebeck. During the eight weeks, that Christina is here, she will be living with Joe, ‘75 and Kathy Rubsam. We owe a debt of gratitude to Joe and Kathy; they make it possible for our Club to sponsor Christina. Saturday, June 11 – Urchins Mass followed by Dinner at Kathy and Dave Rider’s house Our annual Urchins Mass will be held on June 11th at Regina Coeli in Hyde Park. Following Mass, dinner will be at Dave and Kathy Rider’s house. Before dinner, Erin Rider, ’11, will be discussing with us some of her experiences while volunteering as a Summer Service Learning Program Student in Kolkata India. Saturday, July 2nd – Sisters Under Sail – West Point 2011 is the second year that our Club has taken the opportunity to have the tall ship, Unicorn, a traditionally rigged 118 foot tallship, sail up the Hudson and dock at West Point. We are sponsoring six teenage girls from the Astor Home for a leadership sail program that will take place on the tallship. The cost per participant is $225.00 and the Notre Dame Club of the MidHudson Valley, through the generosity of many, will be providing “scholarships” to these girls. Many of you have contributed to the “scholarships” through the line item that is available on the dues notice. Thank you. We are very grateful for your support. Friday, July 29th – Golf Outing Mark you calendars for our annual golf outing at Dutchess Golf and Country Club. Tee off time is 1:00pm. Could you think of a better way to start a weekend! Sunday, August 14th - Graduate Reception and Student Send Off / Raffle Winner Drawing for the All Expense Paid Trip to Notre Dame Mark your calendars now for our annual Graduate Reception and Student Send Off. As is our tradition, we will be cruising up and down the Hudson on the Superintendent’s boat out of West Point while enjoying a pot luck dinner. If for some reason the weather does not cooperate, we will hold the event at the Buffalo Soldier’s Pavilion at West Point. While on the boat (or under the Pavilion) we will be drawing the raffle winner for an all expense paid trip to the home football game of the winner’s choice. The proceeds of our raffle are used to fund the scholarships we provide to our Summer Service Learning Program students as well as to fund our pledge to St. Peter’s School in Hyde Park. As you may remember, in 2010, the Notre Dame Club of the Mid-Hudson Valley made a five year pledge of $500 per year to St. Peter’s School. The pledge is contingent upon the school remaining open. Saturday, September 17th – Gamewatch Our annual gamewatch will be held at Norm’s in Brewster for the ND vs Michigan State game. Matt Wopperer, ’07 is chairing this event. Thank you Matt. We will provide more details as we get closer to the date. October 6th – 9th - 21st Annual Bus Trip to Campus – ND vs Air Force Carl Schaefer, ’56, is chairing our 21st bus trip to campus for the Notre Dame vs Air Force game in October. Sunday, October 16th – 3rd Annual ALS Walk The Notre Dame Club of the Mid-Hudson Valley will be participating in our 3rd Annual ALS Walk in October. The enclosed flyer provides all the details. October, 2011 - Excellence in Teaching Conference This October we will be sponsoring our 16th teacher in the last twelve years to Notre Dame’s Excellence in Teaching Conference. This year, Maureen Myers, a math teacher from St. Joseph’s School in Millbrook will be attending. We are grateful to Carl Schaefer, ’56 for coordinating this. Included with this mailing is our 2nd dues notice. If you have not yet paid your dues, please consider doing so. If you have already paid your dues, thank you. Additionally, thank you to everyone who made additional contributions to our Club. Dues and donations to our Club make all we do possible.
