NIH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH NAME POSITION TITLE Sheila T. Angeles-Han Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Ophthalmology eRA COMMONS USER NAME sangeleshan EDUCATION/TRAINING INSTITUTION AND LOCATION University of the Philippines, Manila, Philippines University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, IL Cornell University, New York, NY Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY DEGREE BS MD Resident MSc Fellow MM/YY 04/94 04/98 06/05 08/08 06/08 FIELD OF STUDY Psychology Medicine General Pediatrics Clinical Investigation Pediatric Rheumatology A. Personal Statement Uveitis is the most common extra-articular manifestation of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), and JIA is the most common systemic cause of uveitis. My research focus is on 1) the outcomes of children with JIA-associated uveitis, and 2) the development of a novel instrument, “Effects of Youngsters’ Eyesight on Quality of Life (EYE-Q)”, to measure visual function and vision related quality of life (QOL) in children with uveitis. I am an assistant professor of pediatrics and ophthalmology at Emory University. My fellowship in Pediatric Rheumatology at the Hospital for Special Surgery and my Masters of Science degree in Clinical Investigation provide a strong foundation for the clinical applications of juvenile idiopathic arthritis and clinical research. I currently have an NIH K23 from the NEI to study the outcomes and QOL of children with JIA-associated uveitis. My long term research goals are to prevent vision loss and blindness in children with JIA-associated uveitis through the: 1) determination of the longitudinal profile of children with JIA-U, 2) identification of clinical and genetic risk markers for disease susceptibility and severity, and 3) validation of the EYE-Q for use as an outcome measure of uveitis. I have developed a novel instrument to measure visual function and vision related quality of life in children with uveitis. This has undergone extensive validation and current studies are ongoing. Validating this instrument will enable widespread distribution as there has been national and international interest in its’ use. It will likewise allow translation into other languages. Widespread distribution will enable better measure of outcomes of children with uveitis and help improve care for these patients and an increased understanding of their daily lives. B.
