Los Angeles Mission College Curriculum Committee Program Narrative AA-T Program Title: Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer Item 1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives The Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology or a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing this degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. This degree will provide the student with a strong foundation in the discipline, as well as breadth of exposure to various areas included in this field. Students completing this program will be prepared to: 1. Differentiate the evidence-based research supporting the wellness effects of exercise in our communities, schools, work place and clinical settings. 2. Identify the uniqueness of kinesiology as a discipline and its integration of a multi-dimensional study and application of physical activity as it relates to biological, medical and health related aspects of the human body. 3. Recognize the areas of study and professional opportunities associated with the Kinesiology major. 4. Complete a Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Kinesiology at any CSU campus. Item 2. Catalog Description The Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer is an academic program that focuses on the art and science of human movement throughout the lifespan. The Kinesiology major focuses on the anatomy, physiology and biochemistry of human movement as well as the leading applications to exercise and rehabilitation therapy. The Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer will provide a strong foundation in the discipline, as well as breadth of exposure to various areas included in the discipline such as teaching (pedagogy), coaching, group fitness, personal training, health/fitness promotion, exercise physiology, biomechanics, athletic training, sports management and dance. Kinesiology majors are given opportunities to develop methodological and research skills used to understand and evaluate a variety of human movement including dance and sport / skill related activities. The Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer will provide the student with a broad based course of study with an emphasis in science related curriculum that will prepare the student for transfer and completion of a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology or a similar major. To complete the degree, students must fulfill the following requirements: (1) Completion of 60 CSU transferable semester units to include the following: A. General Education requirements as identified on the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General EducationBreadth, and B. A minimum of 21 semester units within the major or area of emphasis, as determined by the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees. A grade of “C” (grade of 2.0) or better is required in all courses necessary for the major or area of emphasis. (2) A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
