Master’s of Science with a Major in Nursing
CIP Code:

Anticipated Start Date for Curricular Changes: Fall 2012
Rationale for Curriculum Modification:
Currently the BFLSON offers the specialty track of Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse
Specialist/Nurse Practitioner. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in collaboration with
more than forty nursing organizations developed the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation to
implement modernization and standardization of advanced practice nursing roles across the country.
ANCC is the credentialing center for advanced practice nurse certification; this certification is required
for state licensure as an advanced practice nurse. ANCC sponsors certification examinations that validate
nurses’ skills, knowledge, and abilities in their area of specialization.
The ANCC is retiring the adult psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist track and the adult
psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner track for certification. Only one certification examination for
this specialty will remain—the Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (FPMHNP). This
family focused specialty track will allow these practitioners to provide care for clients across the lifespan,
thus expanding the scope of practice in the specialty.
The fundamental curriculum change has been adapting our adult program for FPMHNPs to include
content for both primary care and psychiatric mental health care of the child and adolescent. Additionally,
we have enhanced the women and elderly population content in many of the psychiatric mental health
courses. These changes have been accomplished by adding one new course and adapting the content of
several of the courses listed below. The curricular change will allow our students to take the FPMHNP
board certification exam.
The Nursing faculty have approved these changes as well as the Dean of the Byrdine F. Lewis School of
Nursing and Health Professions.
