2015 Shoreline School District Secondary Summer School
Middle School Program Guide
July 6 – July 31
8 AM – 12 PM
General Information
Shoreline Summer School is open to Shoreline School District students in grades 7 - 12. Classes will be held at
Shorewood High School, July 6- July 31 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Since these classes are intensive and condensed,
100% attendance is critical and students will lose credit for absences. See the “Summer School Agreement” for details.
We offer two types of courses for students in grades 7 – 8. Special Program courses are funded through grants and require
counselor approval. Open Enrollment courses (Algebra I) do not require a counselor’s approval. Students may take one
course during Summer School.
SPECIAL PROGRAM COURSES (Require counselor signature)
(1) STEP Summer Transition and Enrichment Program: for incoming freshmen only (Not for Credit)
This course is for students needing assistance to successfully bridge from middle to high school. STEP students
learn organizational, time management and study skills, as well as receive concrete instruction in Math and English
to prepare for 9th grade studies in the fall. STEP is a fantastic way for entering freshmen to get an edge in adjusting
to rigorous demands and start their high school careers feeling confident and prepared. Tuition: $25.00
Prerequisite: Selection based on staff recommendation
(2) ELL Integrated Skills Level 1: ENG251 (Not for Credit)
Summer ELL Integrated Skills 1 is an introductory level course for students who are newly acquiring English. This
course provides intensive reading support in addition to introductory access to the general education language arts
curriculum. This class focuses on development of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English
and exposure to grade level language arts content. This course may be repeated for credit, and is also open to
incoming 7th and 8th grade students for no credit. ASSIGNMENTS: Active participation in class discussions; oral
and written presentations; reading and responding to a variety of texts; creative and formal expository writing; and
completion of a bi-literacy project.
Tuition: $25.00
Prerequisite: Selection based on staff recommendation
(3) ELL Integrated Skills Level 2: ENG461 (Not for Credit)
Summer ELL Integrated Skills 2 is an intermediate level course for students who have had some exposure to English.
This course provides reading support as well as instruction using the general education language arts curriculum.
This class focuses on development of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English in academic
settings, as well as grade level language arts skills. ASSIGNMENTS: Active participation in class discussions;
oral and written presentations; reading and responding to a variety of texts; creative and formal expository writing;
and completion of a bi-literacy project. This course may be repeated for credit, and is also open to incoming 7th and
8th grade students for no credit.
Tuition: $25.00
Pre-requisites: ELL Level 1 or equivalent; selection based on staff recommendation
(4) Reading Support: ECR111 (Not for Credit)
This course is designed for students who have not met grade level reading expectations, as evidenced by state and
district assessments. Students will follow a prescriptive process to apply new reading skills in decoding, vocabulary
development, fluency and comprehension to their independent reading and content area class work.
Tuition: $25.00
Prerequisite: selection based on staff recommendation
(5) Math Concepts: MAT001 for middle school students (Not for Credit)
An intervention class that offers 7th grade math concepts designed to meet all learning needs. The course will pre-
teach for some, but re-teach for others. It is a class designed to get students back on track in an accelerated summer
course; as well as, teach some of the important mathematical practices from the Common Core State Standards.
Tuition: $25.00
Prerequisite: Selection based on staff recommendation
(6) Pre-Algebra: ECR221 (Not for Credit)
Summer Pre-Algebra is a great course for students who took 8th grade math (or its equivalent) but need extra
assistance to be successful in Algebra. Students who earned below a C in Math 8 should enroll in this class. Taking
Pre-Algebra over the summer will enable students to be more successful in Algebra 1 as freshmen, therefore
allowing them to progress in a standard, three-year math sequence of Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 during
their high school career. Students will develop their foundation in the number system, expressions and equations,
functions, Pythagorean theorem, statistics and probability with an emphasis on the standards for mathematical
practice. Note: earning 1.0 credits in each of these three courses is required by state law. Pre-Algebra does not
meet the requirements for high school math. Tuition: $25.00
Prerequisite: Selection based on staff recommendation
(7) Washington State History: (Not for credit, will satisfy high school graduation requirement)
This class is open to students who did not successfully complete Washington State History course. The class will
review 3 Washington State Geography, History and Government. This class is not for credit. Tuition: $25.00
(8) Math 7: MAT001 for middle school students (not for credit)
This course is open to students who did not successfully complete Math 7 during the school year. Students refine
their reasoning and problem solving skills as they develop an understanding of and apply proportional relationships,
develop an understanding of operations with rational numbers and work with expressions and linear equations,
solve problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and work with two and three
dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area and volume. For students who were unsuccessful
in Math 7 over the school year, repeating it during the summer increases their likelihood for success in Math 8,
thereby decreasing the probability that they will need intensive math interventions in the future. Tuition: $25.00
OPEN ENROLLMENT COURSES
(1) Algebra 1, Sem 1: MAT731 (.5 math credit)
(2) Algebra 1, Sem 2: MAT732 (.5 math credit)
Summer Algebra 1 is an intensive course that teaches the content and benchmarks covered during the regular school
year of Algebra 1. The critical areas consist of relationships between quantities and reasoning with equations,
linear and exponential relationships, descriptive statistics, expressions and equations, and quadratic functions and
modeling. The critical areas deepen and extend understanding of linear and exponential relationships by contrasting
them with each other and by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend, and students engage in
methods for analyzing, solving, and using quadratic functions. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply
throughout each unit and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a
coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.
Tuition: $275
Prerequisite: Previous enrollment in a year-long Algebra 1 class
Students should select either MAT731 (semester 1) or MAT732 (semester 2) to improve their grade/recover credit
for a failing grade in either first or second semester. Example: A student takes Algebra 1 during the school year.
They pass first semester, but fail second semester (or earn a grade they don’t like). They have the option of taking
the second semester of Algebra 1 by registering for MAT732. Students taking MAT732 during the summer can turn
their school-year grade into a grade of NC, and have their summer school grade show on their transcript and
factor into their GPA.
