Class III Behaviors
Exhibited behavior violent, threatening and/or is a danger to self and/or others, or has the
potential to become a danger.
A. Before problems arise: These behaviors may arise without warning. If the following behaviors results
from continuing problems, methods of resolution should be tried as described above.
B. Observable behavior may include:

Student exhibits violent behavior towards self or others, threatens to harm or kill self or another,
demonstrates exhibitionism, acts out and/or appears to be potentially violent.

Example: An employee hears loud noises in the parking lot and looks out his window. He sees a
group of students yelling at each other, with one woman holding what appears to be a knife. He
contacts the Sheriff’s office for assistance.

Whenever a student expresses suicidal thoughts take them seriously and get help
immediately. Do not leave the student alone.

Example: The student has just failed the course. She is tearful and states to the instructor:
“This cannot happen! My family will never forgive this failure. I am humiliated! The only way
to save the dignity of my family will be to kill myself.”
C. Actions:
1. For violent or threatening behavior:
Protect the safety of self and others, if possible. This is accomplished by establishing control of the
immediate area:

by dismissing the class and dealing with the student individually, if safe to do so

by asking bystanders to leave the area

by designating tasks (such as phone calls) to witnesses to event
Immediately call the Sheriffs Department at extension 7236. If officers are unavailable, call 911
(remember to dial 9 first to get an outside line, if calling from an in-house phone). If possible, buy time
by talking calmly and with concern; do not antagonize.
After resolution of the immediate situation, contact the Vice President of Student Services, for
notification purposes only.
2. For suicidal behavior:
If the student represents a danger to himself/herself and/or others, provide for safety. This is
accomplished by establishing control of the immediate area (if safe to do so):

by dismissing the class and dealing with the student individually

by asking bystanders to leave the area

by designating tasks (such as phone calls) to witnesses to event
If the student represents a danger to himself/herself and/or others, call the Sheriffs Department at
extension 7236
If officers are unavailable, you may call 911 (remember to dial 9 first to get an outside line, if calling
from an in-house phone). If possible, buy time, by talking calmly and with concern; do not antagonize.
If the situation warrants, and there is no immediate danger to yourself, the involved student or others,
you may contact a member of the Crisis Team to obtain immediate assistance. In the event no member
of the Crisis Team is immediately available you may call the Alameda County Crisis Team Services
Community Crisis Response Program (800) 491-9099. Crisis counselors will give assistance (free) via
the phone and/or come on site in their mobile unit.
D. Disciplinary Procedures:
1. For violent or threatening behaviors, the matter is forwarded to the Vice President of Student
Services, and the following will occur:

The Vice President of Student Services may meet with the student (he/she may make a
determination of suspension without meeting with the student). The Vice President of Student
Services will write up final action on suspension or referral for expulsion following the State
Educational Code and following College of Alameda’s “Student Rights and Due Process”
procedures (College of Alameda Catalog).

If recommended for suspension, the student will be suspended by the Vice-President of Student
Services. Results of the review meeting will be documented.

If recommended for expulsion, the matter is forwarded to the College President. If there is no
resolution at this level, the recommendation for expulsion is forwarded to the Chancellor or
his/her designee for final action.
Either decision (above) will result in the following:
o The student will be notified by certified mail
o All appropriate parties will be notified immediately: instructor, Sheriffs Department, and counselor.
2. In the event of suicidal behaviors, the matter will be forwarded to the Vice President of Student
Services, who will involve the Crisis Team, if appropriate. Each matter will be handled on an individual
basis, as the circumstances warrant.
E. In the event a student returns to campus while suspended or expelled, the Sheriffs Department must be
notified immediately, followed by the Vice President of Student Services, the instructor, and the
counselor.
