Dear Algebra I Student, Congratulations! You have been registered to take Algebra I next year at R.C. Edwards Middle School. This course is for high school credit, so be prepared to work hard during and outside of the class to do your best. On the R.C. Edwards Middle School home webpage as one of the scrolling announcements, there will be a link to the summer work for Algebra I. This packet can be printed out from the site, or you can come to the school front office over the summer to get a packet. These problems will be due at the beginning of the second week of school. Please note that all work must be shown to receive credit. Also, there will be a quiz on this material the second week of school. The problems in this packet should be material Algebra I students have already mastered, and are necessary for students to be successful in Algebra I. On the digital copy from the website, there are links to websites that will help you complete the problems if you have trouble. In Algebra I, we will be using a graphing calculator daily. R.C. Edwards will have TI-84 plus calculators that you will be able to rent for the year at registration. Students will also be able to use a graphing calculator on all testing this year, including the Algebra End of Course final exam. These calculators are also the same ones needed for high school math and science courses. If you choose to purchase a graphing calculator, the TI-84 Plus Silver is one of the best choices on the market. This calculator has the ability to have the operating system upgraded via a computer or other calculator. During the summer months, these calculators sometimes go on sale, so by having this information you can take advantage of any savings as these calculators are expensive. If you purchase one, please keep all cords and purchase information that come with your calculator since some are rechargeable and you will need the cord to keep it charged. Also, some of the rechargeable batteries have not been lasting very long, so keeping the sales information for warranty is important. Please keep in mind that the purchase of a graphing calculator is completely optional, and you are by no means required to purchase one for this class. If you have any questions about purchasing a graphing calculator, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Lee Cory R.C. Edwards Middle School leecory@pickens.k12.sc.us
