CP English IV – Week 13
November 25 – 27, 2013
WHAT WE DID THIS WEEK:
1. Students presented their non-fiction book.
2. Students presented their logical fallacy.
3. Students read aloud H.L. Mencken’s “On the Death Penalty” and Michael Kroll’s “The
Unquiet Death of Thomas Harris”.
4. Students analyzed Mencken and Kroll’s selections in terms of their content,
genre/style, and significance.
5. Homework:
A. Read your non-fiction book. Journals due 1/21/2014.
B. If you haven’t presented your book and facilitated an activity, be prepared to do
so on Monday, 12/2/2013.

December 2 – 6, 2013
WHAT WE DID THIS WEEK:
1. Students continued to present outside reading books and facilitated activities.
2. Students chose a non-fiction outside reading, began reading their books, and/or
began writing their journal entries.
3. Students wrote a timed essay, comparing and contrasting Mencken and Kroll
selections, analyzing rhetorical strategies.
4. Students signed up for debate topics: Power of Persuasion Project.
5. HOMEWORK:
A. Read your non-fiction book. Journals due 1/21/2014.
B. If you haven’t presented your book and facilitated an activity, be prepared to do
so on Monday, 12/9/2013.
C. Begin researching for your debate topic.

2. Students chose a non-fiction outside reading, began reading their books, and/or

3. Students researched their debate topics: Power of Persuasion Project.
4. HOMEWORK:
A. Read your non-fiction book. Journals due 1/21/2014.
B. If you haven’t presented your book and facilitated an activity, be prepared to do
so on Monday, 12/16/2013.
C. Finish researching for your debate topic.

2. Students chose a non-fiction outside reading, began reading their books, and/or

3. Students worked on a rough draft of their debate topics: Power of Persuasion
Project.
4. Students learned how to write a movie review.
5. Students viewed “The Book Thief” (field trip) or “The Boy with the Striped Pajamas”.
6. Students drafted and submitted their movie reviews.
7. HOMEWORK:
A. Read your non-fiction book. Journals due 1/21/2014.
B. If you did not complete your movie review, complete over the break. Due
1/2/2014.
C. Rough draft of persuasive essay (debate topic) due 1/2/2014.

Project.
4. Students began reading section 1 of NIGHT and study guide questions.
5. HOMEWORK:
A. Read your non-fiction book. Journals due 1/21/2014.
B. Final draft of persuasive essay (debate topic) due 1/13/2014.
C. Read Section 1 of NIGHT and complete study guide questions due
1/14/2014.

non-fiction selection.

3. Students finished reading NIGHT and completed study guide questions.
4. Students began drafting essay for NIGHT.
5. HOMEWORK:
A. If you didn’t present your book talk, be prepared to present on 2/19.
B. Read your fiction book. Journals due 3/26/2014.
C. Test on NIGHT 2/18/2014.
D. NIGHT essay due 2/18.
