Ash Trees School/ Phase Leader/Classroom Teacher & Core Subject Leader (Literacy) – Job Description POST: Phase Leader – Classroom Teacher and Core Subject Leader (Literacy) SCHOOL: Ash Trees PAY RANGE: Main Pay Scale + TLR 2b + SEN 1 Allowance RESPONSIBLE TO: The Governing Body Job Purpose To take responsibility for the leadership and management of key areas within the provision, providing a model of professional practice for all staff. As a member of the Management Team, to contribute to the overall leadership and management of the school, playing a key role in the development of its core operations. To be accountable for the Literacy aspect of the school’s work and support, hold accountable, develop and lead a team of people focussing on that area. Areas of responsibility and key tasks: To provide key leadership and management support to the school’s Head Teacher, Senior Leadership Team and staff in order to achieve high standards of learners’ behaviour and attainment, achievement and progress. To lead on the operation and day-to- day management of Phase grouping. To line manage support staff and teachers and contribute to the Performance Review or Appraisal of all teachers and additional adults in Literacy where appropriate. Develop and implement policies and practices which reflect the schools commitment to high achievement through effective teaching and learning. Develop plans for Literacy which identify clear targets, timescales and success criteria for its development and/or maintenance in line with school development plan. Monitor progress and evaluate the effects on Teaching and Learning by working alongside colleagues, analysing work and outcomes. Ensure that the Head Teacher, Senior Leadership Team and Governors are well informed about policies, plans, priorities and targets for Literacy and that these are appropriately incorporated into the school improvement plan. Facilitation of projects and programmes as directed by the Head Teacher. Contribute to the school improvement and development planning and promote the learning priorities of the School improvement Plan. Implementation, management and coordination of systems and administration that ensure all information and communication is up-to-date, accurate and user friendly. To be the first point of contact for day-to-day issues surrounding staff and pupils in the Key Stage or Specialist phase/grouping. Provide examples, coaching and training to help others become more effective in their teaching. Enable all teachers to achieve expertise in planning for teaching Literacy through example, support and by leading or providing high quality professional development and opportunities. Staff Development Support and coach staff in developing and extending their pedagogic repertoire. Nurture a strong sense of teamwork and common purpose amongst staff. Ensure that your own lessons consistently model best practice, incorporating a range of teaching strategies and effective classroom management. Devise and lead workshops and development activities to train staff in the implementation of specific skills to improve teaching and learning practice. Take responsibility for personal and professional development. School Ethos and Culture Work with the Head Teacher and Senior Leaders to implement an inclusive programme which promoted positive outcomes for all learners. Develop a team culture utterly committed to high expectations, achievement and learning which is characterised by an obvious aspirational identity amongst learners. Develop strong partnerships with parents to ensure that the school and its teachers have regular and productive communication with parents. Actively support the development of a strong, coordinated relationship with Subject Leaders, Coordinators and members of the Senior Leadership and Management team to ensure regular observation and support for teachers. Support the regular use of formative assessment practices and on-going diagnostic assessments and use of data from assessments to drive on-going improvement of teaching and learning. Work with the Special Needs Coordinator and Numeracy Subject Leaders to ensure that all learners are set challenging targets and achieve at a chronological age level in reading and maths or, if well below level, make significant and continuing progress towards achieving at a level which is commensurate to their ability. Work with staff to ensure that classes, homework and extra-curricular activities provide a variety of engaging and motivational experiences for learners. Ensure continuity and progression in Literacy by supporting colleagues in choosing the appropriate sequence of teaching and teaching methods for phonics, handwriting, letter formation, spelling, punctuation and grammar and reading. Work with staff to develop early communication and reading skills to ensure that pupils with additional needs are set challenging targets which promote the development of functional communication and associated skills. Set clear learning objectives through an agreed scheme of work, developed in line with the school development plan. Evaluate the teaching in Literacy by the monitoring of teacher’s plans and through work analysis / scrutiny, identify effective practice and areas for improvement and take appropriate action to improve further the quality of teaching.
