This handout provides information on historical manuscript collections and University archival
record series maintained by the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University
Archives documenting the history of women. Where available, a hyperlink to an extended
finding aid appears in the Author name.
1. Marquette Federation of Women’s Club Records (MSS-156)
1920-2007, 2 cubic feet
This collection documents the history of an important and active women’s civic
organization. The collection includes a copy of articles of association, early records and
reports of the federal clubhouse, correspondence, by-laws, photos, newspaper clippings,
clippings, and correspondence.
2. American Association of University Women, Marquette Branch Records (MSS-163)
1957-2007, 3 cubic feet
The American Association of University Women is a civic organization that supports
women in higher education. The collection includes receipt and disbursement records,
membership and dues, photographs, newspaper clippings, awards recognition, program
literature, and a brief history of the organization.
3. Northern Michigan University Women Records (Univ Series 3)
1926- ongoing, 7 cubic feet
The collection documents the administration of the Northern Michigan University
Women and various activities and programs offered to its members. Originally
established in 1926 as the Faculty Wives Club, membership was open to the wife of any
member or former member of the Northern State Normal School faculty. The purpose of
the organization was both social and educational geared towards development of
friendships and spirit of service to both university and community. This collection
includes information on club agendas, constitution, correspondence, members,
membership directories, minutes, newsletters, and financial business such as treasurer’s
reports.
4. NMU Commission for Women Records (Univ Series 119)
1990-1994, 4 cubic feet
This collection includes information such as Affirmative Action, applications and rosters,
budgets and receipts, by-laws, minutes and memoranda, information from the Pay Equity
Workshop, sexual harassment policy, photographs, and information from women’s
history month.
5. The Red Dust Oral History Collection (MSS-113)
1982-2000, 6 cubic feet
The Red Dust records consist of approximately 800 oral history interviews documenting
the history of the Central Upper Peninsula. The collection is held in six legal size boxes
and four cassette boxes, including transcripts of oral history interviews, stories written for
the “Red Dust” publication, cassette tapes of various interviews, and video’s
documenting the local history.
6. Northern Michigan University and Regional Oral History Collection (3302-01)
The Northern Michigan University and Area Audio Collection consists of 29 boxes, 23 of
which contain the cassettes in cassette boxes, while the rest hold the transcripts in letter
size boxes. The Northern Michigan University Audio Collection consists of faculty, staff,
alumni, and student life interviews. The collection also contains historical interviews
concerning the university and the former J.D. Pierce School. The collection includes
lectures from the McGoff Lecture series with lectures from Gerald Ford and Alexander
Ginzberg, among others. The collection also consists of debates, press conferences,
presidential addresses, and special events, such as dedications, musical events, and
commencements. Personal collections are also included from Lulu Ervast and Sam
Cohodas. Student oral history projects include interviews pertaining to World War II and
the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
7. American Association of University Professors, Committee W Records (9206-01)
1981-1999, 1 cubic foot
Committee W is a standing committee of the NMU chapter of the AAUP. The chair of
the committee is also a member of the AAUP executive committee. The committee’s
purpose is to examine employment practices affecting women faculty at NMU to ensure
that such practices do not operate to the detriment of any person on the basis of sex and to
recommend to the administration that the university take affirmative action to recruit,
employ, and promote qualified women faculty. In addition, Committee W may
recommend that corrective measures be taken to eliminate sex discrimination in any other
area within the university where evidence might indicate it presently exists. The
collection consists of two three ring binders that contain minutes, agendas,
correspondence, and reports.
8. Zonta Club of Marquette Records (MSS-06)
1970-1994, 6 cubic feet
Zonta is an international women’s club dedicated to the enhancement of women. Their
goal is to promote social respect for women, and to advance the political, educational,
and professional goals of women. Records in the collection include scrapbooks,
correspondence, meeting minutes, and photographs.
9. Pythian Sisters Records (MSS-10)
1960-1968, 1 cubic foot
The Pythian Sisters was a women’s service and civic organization. The Marquette
chapter was titled, Cloverland Temple No. 106. The collection consists of minute books
and an attendance record for meetings during the 1963-1964 year.
10. Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan Records (MSS-31)
1894-1994; bulk, 1940-1994, 18 cubic feet
This collection documents much of the history of the Episcopal Diocese and offers an
important insight into women’s religious activities. Of particular note are the Women’s
Auxiliary records, records of the ordination of women, and the Episcopal Church Women
records.
11. Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church Records (MSS-64)
1856-1998, 10 cubic feet
This collection documents the history of the primary Episcopal cathedral in the Upper
Peninsula. Of particular note are the Women’s Auxiliary Club records. This record
series includes information on, calendar, financial reports, meeting minutes, regular and
executive committee minutes, reports to the national council, and Year Books.
12. St. Luke’s/ Marquette General Hospital Records (MSS-90)
1926-1997, 11 cubic feet
This collection includes extensive documentation on the Women’s Auxiliary club of St.
Luke’s Hospital. Other record series relevant to women’s history include the St. Luke’s
School of Nursing program, the Children’s Fund, and executive and staff meeting
minutes. These records include correspondence, minutes, reports, and miscellaneous
information.
13. Intercollegiate Athletics, Sports Historical Records (0203/TBA)
1956-1996, 38 cubic feet
This collection documents the historical development of various intercollegiate sports and
activities at Northern Michigan University. The collection includes rosters,
correspondence, publicity guides, photographs, performance of individual athletes.
Significant sports documented by the collection include Hockey, Football (1964-1995),
Basketball (1956-1996), Wrestling (1967-1982), and Tennis (1957-1987).
14. Intercollegiate Athletics, General Subject Correspondence File (0203/TBA)
1980-2003, 11 cubic feet
This record series documents official meetings of academic committees, commissions,
taskforces, academic departments, and other organizations related to academic and
administrative programs and developments. Records include minutes, agendas,
membership lists, correspondence, and supporting documentation.
15. Center for Student Enrichment, Student Organization Records (0404/TBA)
1950-1999, 6 cubic feet
This record series documents the administration of the student organizations and provides
excellent evidence of their activities and a record of their existence. Records include
membership rosters, leadership, budget information, and activities information. The
scope and content of information on each group varies.
16. Black Student Union Records (9401-01)
1970-1990, 3 cubic feet
This collection includes correspondence documenting Black History month. Records
include material on the Women’s forums and correspondence of the budget.
